Thanks for the kind comments everyone. All the decorations were made out of fondant.. not sugar paste. Hope you guys like it.

4 in vanilla with strawberry filling, 6 in chocolate with ganache filling and 8 in marble with chocolate mousse. The cake was covered in fondant and all decorations was made out of fondant.

Thank you both!

cakeddc it is much easier to achieve really deep colors if you spray paint.

I agree with cazza1.. I didn't spray paint, but I painted the 2nd tier to give it a deep burgundy color. Once I was done hand painting it with a brush, I remembered that I bought an airbrush machine and was sitting in my cabinet icon_rolleyes.gif

So, I rarely cover in fondant, I mostly do smooth buttercream 90% of the time. Can you spray buttercream?
I have been decorating for 3 years but I am totally self taught, I am a pastry chef at a nice restaurant so my daily life involves plated desserts, but I probably do 4-6 cakes a month as well now from word of mouth recommendations (no website, considering a FB page). Are there any YouTube videos you would recommend for an airbrushing newbie? Is it expensive to get started?

I have spray painted buttercream before. I used the spray cans from michaels. Its been so long so I don't remember how it came out.

I too am self taught. It takes a lot of practice and patience. Thankfully, everyone here is willing to help each other out and lend tips and there is a lot of tutorials on you tube. I haven't used my airbrush yet so I still have to learn how.

Hi everyone,

I was a little busy this weekend - 300 cupcakes and a 6" for a wedding.  Did I mention I hate cupcakes???  Man, I don't think I'll do that again.  Weird thing though, the silly little 6" gave me the most trouble.  That butter cream just didn't want to stay on!  Finally, after redoing it 3 times, I gave up and used ganache, which I figured was fair game since the only specifics were NO FONDANT!  Turned out good though, and I'm glad it's over.  On to a candy cake for my granddaughters birthday party next week!

Have a good week!

BakingMeCrazy that cake is really great. Love it!

My dad - who thought cakes was a dumb idea to make money - has seen just how profitable cakes can be and so to help me out he bought me an awesome airbrush system. But I'm intimidated by it, used it once and it went well, only to discover I used it all wrong and didn't thin the paint and didn't have the correct attachment on it. Ever since then, I've been scared of the stupid thing!

TheLoveofSugar, don't give up on it.  There are so many things you can do to help with the cake decorating and so many tutorials to learn.  My dad actually told me I would never make any money when I first started out.  Must have been about 20 years ago.  He's dad to eat humble cake (cause I don't make too many pies, lol) many times over.  Every time I receive a payment, every time he's with me to deliver a cake, every time he sees people walking in the door, everytime I go out to spend the money I made selling cakes, everytime I pay bills... guess i've made money rofl... I love the running joke with him.

Thanks for the encouraging words Auntginn. My dad had a big old serving of humble cake (same reason, I don't bake pie!) a few weeks back when I won a version of cupcake wars at the college here in Jax. It was actually one of the first times (literally and I'm 32) that my dad said he was proud and that he may have been wrong for poking fun. It was a big victory in my mind, and now he is always asking me what I'm baking and how business is going. I'm
striving to be successful at this so I can have a similar running joke with my dad!

You already are successful just the fact that he acknowledged your achievements.  icon_biggrin.gificon_smile.gif  Nothing feels better than when our family members let us know they are supporting us.  That is all the success I need.
