I've spent this week working on a wedding cake which has given me more than its fair share of trouble and now I'm not sure if I like it or not.

The couple wanted a cake with just vines and leaves trailing on it and sent me a picture with a cake with just leaves climbing up it, they said they were getting a topper made with two birds made out of wood that they wanted on the top.  Turns out the birds weren't wood and came with a red glittery heart, not sure what they are made out of - some kind of modelling dough or clay perhaps, they aren't really my style but they wanted them on there so I figured fair enough.  The bride then decides that she wants a heart with their initials in on the bottom tier, I tried some different ways and painting it on just didn't look right so did a cut out heart with piped letters on which she was happy with.  I'm just having trouble liking this cake, it really isn't my style and wouldn't be my choice of design at all.   I haven't done many wedding cakes and the ones I have done have all had flowers on so this is very different to what I've done before.  I've only had a couple of cakes I've had trouble liking but this is my first wedding cake - is it normal to feel like this?  Is it normal to feel this nervous?!  Also, what do you do if somebody wants to put their own topper on your cake - do you say yes without looking at it or seeing a photo first? Thank you! x

Anyway here is the cake -

I think you did a great job.  The fondant looks good and you have a good amount of leaves.  I think the birds are a little small but there's nothing you can do about that.  I have done things which I'm not sure about.  I have a cake in my gallery with freaking heavy bobbleheads for toppers.  Bobbleheads.  Obviously that wasn't my idea, or my choice!

Just wondering has the bride seen the cake ?  Bottom line, you may not like what your customers want, but it's their cake and they hired you to make it.  I think it looks fine.  Simple & earthy, you are giving them what the 'bride' wants.  If you haven't heard of any complaints I would not worry about it.  It is not about you, although we would like that, it is about what the 'bride' wants. If they do have a topper I really don't see a problem with them choosing it and placing on top of their cake they order from you.  Good job thumbs_up.gif

Thanks for your replies, no the bride hasn't seen the cake yet - the wedding is tomorrow and I'm delivering the cake in the morning.  I normally feel nervous before deliveries but this feels worse than normal!  I think its so different to what I've done before as well.  I do understand I have to do what the client wants, its just hard sometimes to deliver something I don't like!

I think it's cute!  Not my style, like you said, but it really seems to go with the bird topper.

It looks good!  The leaves and vines, just what it sounds like they portrayed to you that they wanted.  Goodness knows, there are always cakes you're not going to like or even want to do because you're not sure of the outcome.  Different people, different choices....as long as it's what they wanted, you've done your work. A word to the wise...never question yourself.  You've got enough to deal with.  Good Job!!icon_smile.gif
