New to Gumpaste Flowers - A few questions!

CREATOR: gd-jpeg v1.0 (using IJG JPEG v62), quality = 100

This cake is my inspiration for my mother's 50th birthday cake in June. (The top two layers anyway...). I have never done gum paste flowers before. I am familiar with a lot of the techniques but I was wondering what cutters and tools I will need to buy for the flowers on this cake.

Will the regular rose cutter be ok or is this an extra large size?

Do I need anything (like a veiner) for texture on the flower petals?

To get the edges crinkly, will I need a ball tool and some foam? Not really sure how they got the rose edges so nice and curled.

Also, the small white flowers look like hydrangeas to me and I love how simple they look. However, since I don't have any cutters currently, it would be really expensive for my to buy the entire hydrangea set of cutters as well as the rose cutters. Any suggestions for a different flower I could use that is just one cutter I could buy instead of the whole hydrangea set?

There are many ways to make roses.  I've tried a few.  This one is my favorite way and you don't need any special equipment. http://cakesdecor.com/LMCakeDesign/blog/560.  It is very easy and you can get a very thing petal.  This is how I made these My favorite way to make roses. No tools needed. I find that I get a much thinner petal this way.

As far as the hydrangeas, I have the Wilton cutters but don't like them at all.

I would rather use cutters for the roses if I can, they seem to be much more efficient and I don't mind the cost since I know I will use them again.

I would like some tips on what other tools I will need. Is a ball tool helpful?

tabathaba you can buy a set of hydranger cutters that have a built in veiner on Ebay for about $3-$4.  They will come from China but are exactly the same as the more expensive ones that we can buy in Australia.  They make a nice hydranger..  That's what I used on this one.  You will need a ball tool for most flowers, to thin the edges and also for cupping. You will also need a petal pad to work on.  I recently bought a celpad and love it.  It is much better than the one I have been using for years.  What sort of rose cutters you buy will depend on how you want to assemble your roses, i.e. 5 petal cutter or single petal cutter.  Watch a few you tube videos and that will help you decide what is best for you.

The cutter I use for roses are the tear drop shape...I have a set of 9, all different sizes. I use a viener and a ball tool for the edges. And use a foam cel bud as the center. Global sugar arts should have all that you need.

Ok, so my mom's birthday was this weekend. I had to do a little rescue because the cake slid on the way to the party but I was pleased with my first sugar flowers!

Here's a close up of the flowers
