Nutella Buttercream Lost Its Flavor

AI gave chocolate cupcakes with nutella frosting as a teacher appreciation gift. Everything was perfect last night...cake & frosting were super flavorful. When I taste the frosting this morning on cupcakes that sat out on a plate, it only tasted like chocolate....no sign of nutella. The cupcakes for the teacher were tightly packed in cupcake container. We already told her it was nutella frosting & am very embarrassed it lost it's flavor. The leftover frosting I saved in a piping bag too only tastes like chocolate. What went wrong? Teacher will expect nutella and I'm embarrassed if hers lost flavor too.
On a side note my only other taste of nutella frosting was at a bakery in TX & to me it was lacking nutella flavor. Is this a nutella thing?
I feel like Nutella has it's own flavor, but not a very strong one. Especially if you added another source of chocolate to it, it could have covered that hazelnut flavor. That's my only idea. I've never made a Nutella frosting, although it does sound delicious and worth playing around with to get to work!
The last time I made nutella frosting (last week) I wasn't happy with it. I used a jar that had been open for a while (although tightly sealed) and I thought it lost it's hazelnut flavor..... because no matter how much I added it just tasted like a really sweet chocolate.
I don't know.....I was thinking the quality of the product might be declining due to it's popularity the past couple years.
AIt was a new jar & I didn't add anything else but powdered sugar and butter. The flavor was so strong right after I made it. I was so embarrassed to give it to the teacher but all she did was praise the cupcakes lol. In the future, I'm just going to use straight Nutella as a filling instead of frosting. Thank you both for your input.
Just to ease your mind, I went to a cupcake shop that is about an hour away from my house when I was pregnant last year. hahaha! They had a Nutella cupcake. I was SO excited and got 2! I got in my car and couldn't wait until I drove home to eat it. I took one bite of it and wanted to cry - literally!...Remember, I was preggers!
It had zero Nutella flavor. It was quite a disappointment. I ended up throwing them out. I wanted Nutella! LOL!
I've only used Nutella as a filling between layers but not as an icing. Thanks for the info... I was considering mixing it with my buttercream for a cake this weekend (change of plans coming up!)

I tried making a nutella frosting once, standard american buttercream recipe with nutella added, it didn't really turn out. Like you said no real nutella flavor. I would use it straight up as a filling, maybe thicken it up with powdered sugar to make it a frosting.
I wonder if a little bit of hazelnut extract would bring back the Nutella flavor? I have experienced this same issue as well.

How ironic. I just made cupcakes with Nutella buttercream last night. The icing was delicious then but I haven't eaten any on the cupcakes yet.
I made cupcakes with nutella frosting a few weeks back and they turned out really good. It still tasted of nutella a few days later when I ate the last one. Anyone that tasted one knew straight away they had nutella in.
All I did was add about half a cup (maybe? I didn't measure it, just did it by taste) to the usual butter and icing sugar mix. A little vanilla too.
I'm not sure how it would go wrong. :-(
It was still good! I mixed one (brand-new) jar of Nutella with one cup of salted butter and let the mixer run a few minutes until they were well blended. I then added 2 teaspoons of vanilla. After that, I put in 4 cups of powdered sugar, on at a time, mixing after each cup. Then I blended in 2 tablespoons of milk. It was too thick, though. Next time, I'll add more milk.
Good luck!
Thanks for the tip EMETZ74! I wound up using it as straight filling between layers of a sculpted cake this weekend so it was fine (no bc added!) But the whole jar of Nutella is more than I would have thought to add, so it's good to know!

AThank you Rebecca and emet!!!! Glad to know y'all were successful. I'll try it again :-).
ATo get a better flavoured nutella u need to add more hazelnuts, make a praline with roasted hazelnuts then pop in blender to make praline paste. Mega hazelnut flavour, add to your buttercream and this should improve the flavour no end you can add more or less to taste.
