I'm making my first fondant covered cake next week and I have a question I'm hoping someone will be able to answer for me. 

I am making a rocket cake using the Wilton football cake pan.  The cake will be covered and decorated with fondant.  Then the cake will be placed on a fondant covered cake board which will be decorated as outter space.  My question is:  Do I put the cake on a cake board that has been cut to the shape of the rocket (football), cover it and decorate it with fondant, THEN place the board and cake on the fondant covered board?  Or do I place the cake on the fondant covered board and then cover it and decorate it with fondant? If so, I don't want to cut the fondant on the cakeboard when I'm trimming the fondant after I cover the rocket (football) - how do I avoid this?  I appreciate any suggestions

Personally, if it was me, and others may do it differently, but I would cover and fondant before placing on the board.  Mainly because I wouldn't want to ruin the fondant placed on the board.  I know it's a bit of a faff on covering with fondant then transferring but as long as you have a good solid piece of equipment to help transfer, you should be ok.

But I'm very much a novice so someone else might be better able to help you :) xx

i always cover my cakes with fondant before placing on the fondant covered board.i also cover the board in fondant and cut the cake board shape out of it where i want the cake to be on the board.so that when you put the cake on the fondant covered board the board that the cake is on lies flush with the fondant covering the board.hope this makes sense.
