Vegan Buttercream very grainy

I am making some vegan cupcakes for a family member that requested them for a baby shower. I have looked up numerous threads on Cake Central regarding the matter and most people seem to use regular powdered sugar in their recipe, which is not vegan.

 

I tried to make vegan powdered sugar using Florida Crystals vegan sugar and cornstarch, but was unable to get it anywhere close as fine as store-bought regular powdered sugar.

 

The end result is a "buttercream" that tastes good, but is very grainy. It also is not white at all because the sugar is kind of tan colored.

 

Has anyone else used this type of truly vegan buttercream and been able to pipe with it?

I wonder if a modified (to be vegan) version if the sugarshack recipe would work? Since it uses hot liquid, that might dissolve your sugar and give you something nice and smooth

I'm not familiar with the product you used, but would it be possible to run it through the food processor?

can you find confectioners sugar made from sugar beets , no bone char is used.  I would bet that the less expensive confectioner sugar is from beet sugar.  you might be able to call stores to find out.

buy Woodstock brand (or something similar) Vegan Powder Sugar.  You have to special order it if you aren't in a large metro area that has a health food store that carries it (not sure even Whole Foods does).  It isn't going to be cheap, so be sure to pass that additional cost along to your vegan family member who is requesting it.

if you're able to find an organic powdered sugar you can use that.. bone char is not permitted in the processing of organic sugar.. I buy Whole Foods Market's 365 brand

Thank you for your help. I used a food processor, but it did not get nearly as fine as regular powdered sugar. It still tasted good, but the texture was a little weird. I also used Sugar Shack's method with the heated liquid, but it didn't help either.

 

This was for a family member, so next time I'll just decline the order. I have to drive 60 miles round trip to get to Whole Foods and I don't anticipate enough vegan business to justify ordering and keeping stuff on hand.

Like lorieleann, I suggest Woodstock powdered sugar.  You need to sift it, because it is clumpy. In fact most vegan sugars are clumpy, I think they must have a higher water content.  Yes, it's going to be tan/brownish, but vegans know this and are usually just fine with it.  On occasion I have a vegan that wants it to be white and I'll add powdered titanium dioxide if they agree. 

 

I use the Zambito method of making frosting and it smooths just perfectly I've used high ratio and palm oil with no problems. Here's a pick of a recent vegan cake I made. However, I get my liquid warm but not piping hot and I never let the mixer go beyond 6.
