Stack Or Decorate First?

Hello,

I have done a handful of wedding cakes but am still pretty new to the whole process. I am doing a wedding cake soon which is two layers, a 10 inch round and a 6 inch round. Each layer will be 6 inches tall. The bottom layer will be covered with cream fondant and then covered with ombre fondant ruffles moving from cream to turquoise. The top layer will be covered in red fondant and then covered with lots of red fondant flowers. My question is whether it would be best to decorate everything first and then stack the cakes or to stack the cakes first and then do the detail work? I guess I am just concerned about the possibility of any of the red decorations falling onto the cream of the bottom layer while I am decorating.

Thanks

Can you lay some baking paper over the bottom tier, stack the top, decorate, then remove the paper?

If you do it in 3 or 4 pieces, you just have to pull the edge out from under the top tier.

Personally, I would prefer to decorate the cake once it's stacked. It's very hard to move, handle and centre a decorated tier without marking it.

AI tended to decorate then stack. I think its mostly personal preference. If you're using SPS as the support system, its the easiest thing ever to get the cake centered without marking or damaging the edges.

AI do the fondant or buttercream covering, then stack, then add final decorations.

AThanks for all the recommendations! I think I will stack first and decorate second because the flowers are pretty delicate. Thanks again :)
