I'm doing a hunting cake for my boyfriends bday and it is going to be a forest scene of him in a tree stand shooting a bow. Just looking for some suggestions or ideas on how to do it. I know I'm going to put in a creek bed and a tall tree. I want some spuratic spots of tall grass , kinda like prarie grass and I'm not sure how to go about it to make it stand up tall and look realistic. Any ideas or help would be awesome. I'm doing the cake for next sat.!!!

I have done grass using a gumpaste/fondant blend... a little bit more gumpaste  than fondant. After coloring it with the color I wanted, I rolled it out very thin.  I initially cut  a strip to the height and width of the grass clump I wanted. Then, I used and exacto knife and cut the individual blades of grass, and bent some forward, gave some a little curve to make it look realistic, and then put it on the cake.  My cake was buttercream, so I just kind of set it into the frosting gently, and it stayed perfectly.  Just be sure to give it plenty of time to dry so it will stand up like you want it to.  I hope this helps.  I have a husband and three boys who love to hunt and hunting cakes can be a bit hard.  There are some great ones on here for inspiration tho!

thanks so much of was thinking of just using a really think buttercream to make it stand but since i only have a week and im starting now i dont wanna waste too much time with errors. This cake is going to be epic with a ton of details. I cant wait to get it all together. im carving out 1/2 sheet to make it look like a hollar with one giant tree made of crispies covered in modeling choc in the back right corner. this will have the tree stand and the guy with a bow. Then cover the ground in short and tall grass with leaf piles and shrubs. and a rocky stream running along the front side. im using piping gel and fondant to do the water. u wouldnt happen to know how to give water a crest look would you? like the white part hitting and running around the rocks. Im going to have a clearing with wild flowers and a deer drinking from the stream! I cant wait i just hope it turns out the way i vision it in my head!

Maybe some royal and a leaf tip?  No fondant needed!

And as far as the mossy effect, just kind of sponge some brown/green where you want it.

Hope I helped =D

Also, for the grass clumps... I forgot where I saw the tutorial, but the person took a mesh strainer with small holes (not quite fine mesh, but not a spaghetti strainer), and pushed green fondant through. Then they took a pairing knife and scraped tiny clumps of grass in one swipe from the bottom side of the strainer where the grass came out. I hope I was clear in explaining...
