Is there an area for those of us who are new to cake decorating?

Unfortunately not. The great thing is, when you ask a question you get answers from people who really know what they are doing. I just started a few months ago. It's great getting so many great ideas from people that have been doing this a while.

Wonderful idea! There isn't bit there are many helpful people.

I do recommend doing a quick search for some of the frequent topics:
Smoothing buttercream, cake support (SPS), pricing cakes, etc.

Also, there is a thread about popular acronyms & abbreviations like CC is cake central

It's never "just cake!"

You may get a cake for $way to little but you won't get this cake!

Here you will find all kinds of tutorial, go over them at your own pace , and if you have any questions with any of the techniques, you can go to the CC forum and someone is always willing to help. That is what I do, I have learned a lot this way.
