Hi evrybody.

I am ‘brand’ new to this site. I have been browsing the web and came across all the different colour velvet cakes, black, blue, orange, green, etc. I just wanted to know what your take on this is and if there is anyone that has tried a velvet cake other than the classic red one?

thanks

I have made "green" velvet cupcakes before for my little boy and he loved them..what is 'gross' to some may be amazing to others..I have also seen 'blue' velvet cakes done that look really nice so it really depends on what the person eating the cake would like.

Thanks Hajrak, I agree. I saw a picture of a pink velvet cake and it looked really good too!

I made a blue velvet once.  It was very pretty and others said it tasted ok (I could taste the food coloring, yuck).  I think I used way too much food coloring because everyone ended up with a blue mouth!

I think the amount of food coloring used definitely can alter the taste. When I made my green velvet cupcakes, I used maybe just a little bit of the liquid food coloring and it definitely made it dark green, but the taste was the same as my usual red velvet cupcakes.

Gross definitely because of all the food coloring.  The red velvet cake I make is very good, but I can only try it in a five second window before I realize how much food coloring is in there.  It has nothing to do with taste.  Sometimes it can taste great with a ton of food coloring, but it's just the sheer amount that grosses me out.

I have done blue and green velvet cake. It tastes the same as red velvet. In my opinion it sometimes tastes better because you don't need as much of it to achieve that "red" color that seems to be so elusive.

I actually use half as much color as my red velvet recipe calls for, and it is plenty red for me. I made green velvet and blue velvet, too, but I hate putting a lot of color in my food as well. YUCK! I saw a purple velvet that was really pretty, but I don't want to eat any of them. White velvet is something I can really get behind, but I add twice the cocoa powder to my velvets, as well, so it wouldn't be white ;-)
