Best technique for gum paste cupcake toppers?

So, my daughter's 4th birthday party is Sunday, April 28th. She is HEAD OVER HEELS in love with My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. I normally have her cake made but this year i'm doing it myself because the choices for her theme are limited. Hopefully, there are some Mommies who know about MLPFIM. My plan for her cake is going to be a basic two layer round cake and 2 dozen cupcakes. Each of the ponies has what they call a "cutie mark" it is a small mark on their bottoms. There are 6 main characters on the show whose cutie marks i would like to replicate as cake toppers. Now, heres what i need help with. I am using gumpaste. I figured they would stiffen and do well as cake toppers. How thick should i make them? Whats the best way to transfer and cut out the shapes? And how much time should i give it to dry? I know it seems like really basic stuff but I am new to this. Thanks :-)

If they're going to be small and just placed on the frosting, you can roll them about 1/8" on some sprinkled powdered sugar or cornstarch so they won't stick when you transfer them. Cut them with cookie cutters, gum paste cutters, free hand or trace them with a sharp knife to cut them out. I always give the several days, just to make sure they are going to be completely dry. A lot can mess with the drying time including the weather, especially humidity! Gum paste will dry rock hard, so remember to tell the kiddos not to eat them! icon_smile.gif
