Questions About Using Pvc As Cake Armature

I'm using PVC pipe as a cake armature for a large cake for the first time and would like any input/tips from other that use this on a regular basis. Do you cover the pipe with clear plastic wrap before sliding the cake on it or just make sure it's clean before you start adding cake. And how to you cover the metal base that the pvc is screwed into? with fondant/a cake board. Thanks for any input you can give.
I just wash the pvc with hot water and bit of bleach and then let it dry for several days. I don't really like saran or foil near cake that will be cut--too much risk of bits coming off if cut.
You can mask the metal flange with fondant or any decoration(s) that go with the theme.
