Need some more advice please on best practice

Tried this on the how to board but didn't get any replies, may be too general?

On my two year olds cake I want to put a checkered flag, or maybe plain flag, held up by two poles. How could I do this? What shall I use for poles? How do I make it curve as if its in the wind? I wanted to write happy birthday on that part but its only going to be about 3" long so fondant letters won't fit, I have sugar pen, but can I write on it once its dry?
Also, can I pipe buttercream on to fondant? (to make a line of sorts)

Thanks in advance!

Cut your flag our of fondant.  Attach it to a sugar stick, thin dowel, isomalt stick, rounded stick shaped fondant,  or whatever you want to use for the poles.  Then lie it flat and get your movement by sticking scrunched up paper towel or something similar under the fondant in strategic spots.  Let dry and then you should be able to write on it with your sugar pen.
