Ideas For Birthday Cake For A 12Yo Boy ?!

Hey creative cake designers :D
Lately I'm all about gumpaste flowers, so I'm not really creative with boy cakes...
A former co-worker asked my to make a simple cake for her son's bday on April, 25th. She has no idea of the design. She wants it simple, no fondant, but chocolate ganache or buttercream, and it should be a one tier 8" round cake. That's all I got for info. The flavors don't bother me, but I have no idea what boys that turn 12 would like for a cake. His mum suggested bunnies, but come on, I don't want to make him a "childish" cake, now that he turns 12, I'm afraid he may feel treated like a baby..
I hope anybody could help me. I searched the gallery but I have NO idea.

Get some more info from mom. Ask specific questions like what is his favorite hobby, what sport does he enjoy, favorite cartoon, favorite video game, etc. I'm sure you'll get a concrete idea that way. If you still can't get anything out of mom you can go with a basic celebration cake- balloons, confetti, and the like. Hope this helps!
AI did an iPod for an 11 year old last year but that might involve some fondant. You might find something around video games, music, sports. I had a similar request for a 16 year old boy and after asking a few questions found out he was really into his guitar and music.

We had everyone wear camo, and did an obstacle course, and target shooting with paintball. The kids had a blast.

This is a link to a monster truck cake made for my nephew. It's chocolate, and you could modify it for a round 8" cake. My nephew was 10 at the time the cake was made.

If she wants a "simple" round 8" chocolate/ganache cake, make a cake and cover it with chocolate curls. That's always a hit, no matter what the age.

I asked her several questions and it seemed like she didn't know her son very well and there came the "uhm, I think, maybe he would like a bunny. bunnies are cute". I told her she should talk to him orask his older brother to give me an idea of his interests to create something.
the classic chocolate buttercream and confetti cake is always good, and not so popular here in Ecuador either, I'd suggest it, thank you :)
Also it's not for a party, just for family, so she wanted it quite small and simple.

chocolate curls sound fun, didn't do some in a long.

I have four sons, aged 16, 14, 12 and 7 and bunnies wouldn't feature on a cake for any of them - and never has!
I've always tried to tie their cakes in with current hobbies or interests - in the past I've made cars, rugby boots, ipod/ipads, a laptop, hamster, treasure chest and various other things.
A very simple idea for a round chocolate cake is to make it to represent a round racing track and make some simple racing cars from a sausage-shaped chocolate truffle/cake pop mix. I used Smarties for the wheels and steering wheel and Smartie eggs (hard to get after Easter though) for the driver's helmet.
AI asked my 12 year old twins if they would want a bunny on their cake and they said,"maybe on a camo cake, with a target on the bunny" lol.
I asked my husband if he ever wanted a bunny on his cake, and he said maybe when he was 2.
It seems like cars are always a classic for boys!
I'm going to meet with the mum on Wednesday but will definitely call her again today to say her that she shouldn't go with bunnies at all...

It's SO hard to make a cake if the mum has not a single idea. My fiance works with her, so I asked him to ask her a few more questions and talk her out of the stupid bunny idea... I hope he is into sports, or cars or maybe music. That would give me plenty ideas for a simple and small cake!

I would try to get more info about what he's into and what he likes so the cake could be more specific to him, such as basketball or skateboaring. A skateboaring theme cake could be really cool ! But, you could just come up with something on your own using colors for a boy such as blues, greens etc. Maybe pipe a 13 (I assume he's turning 13?) onto the cake and put some cool decorations on there.
Planes?
Trains?
Automobiles? (Why am I thinking in Steve Martin movie titles today?)
Spacecraft?
I'd say video game theme, or a photo of a 16-year-old girl.
Now if the bunny were a PLAYBOY bunny, . . . . well, I guess a 12-year-old might be a bit too young for that sort of cake.

HAHA I agree!! My son is 7 and he'd balk at that ... now tell him you're making a boat themed cake or something with big trucks/heavy equipment, he'd be in heaven! LOL but bunnies???!!! For a 12 year old, I don't think that'll go so well.
