Attached is a picture of my dream wedding cake. My fiance has already said that I'm not allowed to make our wedding cake (fair enough - it's a stressful job!). We are thinking of ordering several flavours of cupcakes instead of having a cake. But I still find myself thinking of this dream cake....

Do you think that I could make this giant flower out of gumpaste well in advance and put it on a fake cake just for the display? Does anyone have any recommendations on technique and/or materials, etc.?

Thank you very much.

Someone just started a thread about that cake a few days ago - try searching "ruffle flower cake".  I think that was the heading.

Yes, you surely can make that cake and keep it for your wedding day. It is shown on lots of sites. I think kara butin(google that) and her blog will come up and she is showing it also. hth

Yes, Melissa that's how I got the link to show how to make the rose on the side of the cake.  I am dying to make one now.

I think you can definitely manage to make this as a display cake for your wedding! As far as cake decor goes, it is very simple and even a relatively inexperienced caker could get a lovely result. I have done several of these for wedding clients and I've been pleasantly surprised to see how quickly and simply it comes together! You could even start with a purchased sugar rose for the centre if you are not confident making your own roses, and simply make your "exploded" petals separately by hand.

AI actually made this cake for a bride and I used individual large petals. It was so simple once I made the petals! I used royal icing to attach the petals.
