I just found out im going out of town that weekend. Its a 3 tier cake draped in fondant. Im not concerned with the freshness as everyone says fondant cakes last 3-4 days. How do I explain it to them?

i would deliver it as scheduled--or have someone trustworthy deliver it

i would be very unhappy if i got a call with news like this--i would cancel for breech of contract

the contract binds both ways

i mean even if it's a dire medical issue or something--you have to have a back up plan

is there anyone that can deliver it for you on time???

IMO you don't tell the bride anything. It is not her problem but yours. I would ask the venue if I could drop it off there early wrapped and ready for presentation however if they will not accept it then you need to start finding someone you can trust to deliver and set it up.

I agree that's your personal problem not the customer. I would be livid if I recieved a call like that 3 days before my event. All I'd want is for you to do what I paid you for and that's to have my cake there Sunday.

I am extremely easy going to the point that I will inconvenience myself to keep someone else from being inconvenienced.  That said, if I were paying a professional for professional services, "I just found out that I'm going out of town that weekend" would not hold water.  It truly isn't up to them to have to understand that their cake will still be fresh.

Absolutely!

If you sell cakes, you are a business and you will be expected to act like a professional.  I can't tell you how many trips I have missed over the years because we had cakes due, it's part of the business.

Please don't take the advice to call the venue and ask to store it there for 2 days, not only will they say no because of the liability (they probably have an event on Saturday with 100+ people) but they may very well warn any bride that mentions they are using you in the future.

You either need to cancel your plans and deliver the cake when it is supposed to be delivered or find someone else to deliver it for you.

Best of luck!

most definitely deliver as scheduled NO MATTER the reason for leaving town. not to sound rude, please dont take it the wrong way, but if you are here making this post, then you must not be in a life and death situation which would be the ONLY time you would not deliver as scheduled and only AS A COMPLETE LAST RESORT. you do not want to put a bad taste in anyone's mouth, trust me, it WILL follow you. A bad reputation will spread 10x faster than a good one will. best of luck!

I appreciate the feedback. They are all very true. This cake happens to be for a friends graduation at a discount and isn't a paid final order yet. Which is the only reason I considered it to not be too late to find a plan B. Rest assured if it were for a bride I would simply cancel travel plans.
