I have to do a wedding cake where there are multiple ribbons in the buttercream cake. The ribbons are

going not just around the bottom, but somego diagonally around the cake. How can I keep the ribbon from soaking up grease and how can I attach them?

When I attach ribbon to a buttercream cake, I rub them with shortening first.  It will change the color of the ribbon but it will be a uniform color change from uniform fat instead of blotchy little spots that come from letting the fat from the buttercream come out where it pleases.
