AHi everyone....this is probably going to be the wierdest wuestion you've been asked on CC so far... Basically, i bake cakes just as a hobby and I have made so many cakes just for fun snd handed them out to neighbours. I think its come to a point where they just expect cakes to come to their doorstep every week. I would like to know what the hobby bakers do with their cakes (other than eat it)...I was thinking of donating the cakes but to who?! Very confuzzled! Thanks xxx
Schools, homeless shelters, nursing homes. I think those are a few places that would love a donated cake.
AWhen ever I have batter left over from making a cake I don't want it in the house cause ill eat it !!!!! So I use my left over batter and frosting to make cup cakes and I drop them off at my hair dressers. There is never a shortage there for people wanting a treat !
AThat's a great question! I've often wondered the same thing. I think I will just start taking it to my kids school. I sure cant keep it in my house!
I too love to bake, and am always trying out new recipes, but need to share the calories! Most of my random cakes cookies and cupcakes go to work with me. My coworkers love it, and it is a small way of thanking them. I also donate cakes to our church and my son's school. Premade cakes go to events or bakesales, or I donate a custom ordered cake to silent auctions. I really enjoy the silent auctions, because I get to make cake styles I wouldn't otherwise (we have no girls in our family!) and it generates money for worthy causes.
Just discovered a local branch in the next town...about 7 miles away Thanks Jason.

Because I live in a big city where everyone is freaky over what comes from where, when I started or if I just want to try a new effect and can't sell it to my customers, I would send a flyer out to my neighbors and hold a raffle. I would sell tickets for $5.00 and they would get a cake to feed 20-30 ppl. They would come over to my home on the designated time and someone would draw the name. I would donate the money to a charity in that person's name. Everyone enjoyed it. MOre often then not it went to our local school.
A silent auction is a fund raising event that is pretty popular with schools and churches. People bid on items by writing down amounts for the desired items (thus "silent") over the course of the event, and at the end the highest bid wins of course. Gift baskets, services (lawn work, babysitting) and all kinds of things can be available for bidding. I put out my photo album and description (minimum bid, max number of servings, maximum number of tiers, how far I will deliver, and also expiration date) It usually goes for $150 to 200 for up to 30 servings. So the money goes to a good cause and I have fun making a cake which is usually for someone's special event.
