Is it a good idea to bake 4 dozen cupcakes the night before a morning birthday party? How can I store them?

Sure, as long as you can get them decorated in time.  Just put them in a cupcake box and they will be fine.

I'm just doing a simple swirl and I'm hoping the cupcakes will still taste fresh the next morning. Thanks for your response Norasmom.

Are you decorating them the night before as well, or just baking and decorating in the morning?

If you place them in an airtight container they'll be just fine!  I bake a day before often and put them in those airtight clamshell containers and they are still fresh the next day.

Oh sure, it's totally fine to do them a day ahead and leave on the counter in an air-tight container overnight.

I do all of my cupcakes the night before an event.  I decorate them, put them in their boxes and tape the boxes up.  Always just as moist and just as tasty.  If it is anymore than a day, I would say to freeze them.

I agree with not putting them in the fridge; that would dry them out. However, the icing would not freeze if you did put them in the fridge...

My normal routine would be to bake them the day before or 2 days before and freeze them, tightly covered. Before decorating them, I will thaw them at room temperature, still tightly covered until they reach room temperature. Somehow I find that not only does it not dry out, but it is very moist and IMO they taste better than freshly baked cupcakes. Just my opinion. For me, it works best for chocolate and red velvet cupcakes.
