stars on wires please help

Maybe you can wrap the individual wire in food safe plastic wrap and then insert it, just throwing an idea..

I don't know if this will work with your design but you can make small balls of fondant (different colors if that works), flatten the bottom some and insert the wire into the balls.  Let them set up some and glue to your cake.  I am assuming you are using fondant.

I use balloon sticks for pegging my cakes as well as sticking things into the cake.  They are like heavy straws and can be washed/dried before using.  Be sure and tell the bride or someone in charge that you have used them.   Oleta

Could you dip the ends of the wires in royal icing and leave them to set hard before putting into the cake? I mean, as long as the royal icing stays on the wire when the wires are taken out (i.e. to cut the cake) then no wire is touching the cake? Has anyone tried this?
 

gemmal--i think the cake would eventually sog out the royal--might not work

dipping the wires in wax might work though--have them bent the way you want them first so it doesn't crack off--assuming it will stick in the first place--i never tried it--just a thought

might have to scruff up the surface of the wire for wax to adhere--a little sanding action??

You might be able to dip them in chocolate and let them set up.  I don't think the cake would (to quote K8memphis) sog out the cake.  I've not tried this though......
 

When it comes to cheap metal made in China, I don't want to take any chances with my cakes that are intended to be eaten as well as looked at. No way am I going to trust that a tiny covering of chocolate or royal to hold up as a barrier between toxic leaching metal and my food product.  It's very simple to use thin straws, no big deal. 

There are 2 ways I know of. I know you will have a lot inserted into the cake but they will be easy to take out. 1 use stir sticks cut down and fill with royal icing it will hold the metal and come out easily once royal icing dries. Also if you get sucker sticks that have a small hole in them you can use them as well and just push the metal into them. Both should be efficient.
