How Many Of You Are Making Enough Cash Flow For This To Be Your Main Source Of Income?
Business By SweetBakeCakes Updated 19 Mar 2013 , 4:05pm by SystemMod1
There are three area's i would consider opening shop eventually, all three towns have zero custom cake shops and two small bread bakery's... The population for the first place is 84,057 second 50,435 third 288,448
I don't and wont have it all figured out but i am trying very hard to turn my passion into a career...
I agree about the fondant, it looks great. So you have the talent. As the previous poster stated, it's always best to make the cake 100% edible and done by hand. (even if the decorations aren't supposed to be eaten.) That is the time consuming part.
Thanks :) and yeah the customer wanted the broken tiara on her cake she brought it to me ... I think that's the only cake i've ever just thrown together... I offered to make a gum paste tiara for 12.00 more and she thought it was in sain that i would charge her a extra 12.00 ... what? so this is what she brought me.....
Who's a MOD? i think after being this active in threads my post should show right away this is really annoying *like a frizbee flat cupcake!*
I don't know if this is a clear competitive advantage let me know what you think... I offer the customer to pick between AMBC and Swiss Meringue butter cream... My prices are 3.00-3.50 mite change to 4.00 tops... Others are 5.00-7.00/serving in this area...Home bakers 2.00/serving but normally haven't a clue about cake decorating no offense! I specialize in custom children's cakes, there are only two shops that offer everything i do... none offer the choice of SMBC & AMBC if that even makes a difference idk yet... I offer home made Candy's and would like a candy bar if i opened shop... and much more! Something like a children's shop/couture cant really explain it as its all in my head... I offer French Macaroons, cupcakes, fudges, truffles, cream puff's etc... which not many custom shops do around my area... I have a fun "look" to my appearance as would my shop, something fun yet screams gourmet! I also make home made ice cream which i have not seen around here either... Free monthly tasting events.... I know it may all sound tacky but trust me i have some really nice ideas for my shop... And have ways to cut cost as well.. Such as buying wholesale, family members working for nothing with faith we will one day have a big name... A big name for our small town that is and much more!
Sounds very unique and delightful.
To answer the question of the OP (LovelyCakes4Us, CuteCakes1234, or SweetBakeCakes): Cake decorating is just a hobby right now, so the only cash flow comes from my husband. I would like to make it into a business just like you. Right now, I'm struggling with my Business Plan (maybe you have some advice for me?). Good luck on your growing business.
To answer the question of the OP (LovelyCakes4Us, CuteCakes1234, or SweetBakeCakes):
Absolute mega lawlz
It takes years and a lot of work to be able to cake full time with enough profit to sustain a family. You will probably need to find other revenue avenues like classes, tutorials, books, editorial work, merchandise etc, which can only be done once you have a following which takes time, a huge workload and PR.
I believe so, i mean time will tell how long it will take my team to work full time.. I say i'm giving myself 3-6 months but in all reality i'm hoping to opening a store front in 2015 i think that's enough time to get all education, save up some money, perfect my caking skills as much as possible and much more..
I'm taking a small brake for 3-6 months does not mean i think ill know it all by then... I still have to apply for loans, go to as many classes as possible (none decorating classes) business classes... And dream to open my store front in 2015 will that happen? ehh who knows... but i'm not going to loose faith into what i am very determined to do...
To answer the original question, I CAN earn enough to cover all our expenses as a family, but I choose not to. Last year I grossed $50000. So, it wouldn't be a GOOD living, but we could make it.
But I choose not to be full time, even last year. This year we're cutting our orders by 50% just to take a break for some family things. But yes, it is possible, if you don't have kids- which right now I have 2. If I didn't have kids and could dedicate myself completely, I would be grossing about $90000 based on the orders I turned down last year plus those I took.
Not every year will be like last year, but let's just say it was a really good year for cake in 2012!

I looked into this, as well ;-) In these photos of Cutecakes1234's Facebook page she started, you will see the zebra striped baby bump that LovelyCakes4Us was talking about so extensively in January and used as a profile picture... And all these photos have the same card in the picture, which are from the same Facebook page. But SweetBakeCakes posted some of them, while Cutecakes posted others, and LovelyCakes posted the others.
Didja lose your password? lol!
And now you talk of taking business classes, but on your previous Facebook, it says you are in the Class of 2013 Minneapolis School of Business.http://www.facebook.com/anniesunique.delights

That is SoBad! "What a tangled web we weave...."
That's great! I hope to be like you some day as for caking! I do have children... but as long as their needs are met and running a business as well it should hopefully be okay... My aunt lives in Cali stared her cake shop with 4 children and it turned out great... She was however making cakes from home for about 2 years then took out every penny in her and her husbands credit card to open a shop... Shes still doing great! and is 38 so im hoping i can figure my stuff out like she did... I remember how clueless she was about caking and how no one in my family believed she could make it but now shes rocking it... Thanks for the post!!!!! :D

Anna is that a crime to TRY to hide my identity lol no it is not
It's not a crime to keep yourself anonymous, but it's rude and ungrateful to keep asking for help you're not interested in and then come back with a new account and a new story and ask for yet more help you don't want.

I would trust Jason on this, he knows all about rules, as you well know.
But if the mods don't care I don't really see how it is an issue.
I will delete this account and become a lurker that is just fine thanks for all of the help!!!
Nah.. i think ive pissed enough people off... no sense in trying to better my self and start over with this account... or any other...
You should just keep this account and stick to it, it's really not a big deal. You don't have to cut your nose off to spite your face, if you are benefiting the forum then just post normally like everyone else. But please do take a break from caking to gather up all your ideas and erm, passion
You have a distinctive style of posting, so everyone knows its you anyway
