I was wondering if anyone knows a good software program to use when adding edible pictures to a cake ..

You can use any printer software or photo shop type program.
 

i want to add background and things . Do you thin a pic from blingee would work ?

Just treat your sheet of icing as if it is a piece of paper.  Create your design as you would in the normal way and when you are happy with it print.  It is no different except that you are using icing sheets and food coloring instead of paper and ink.  Everything else is done the same.

I have rice paper to have you ever used that ?

I find rice paper far easier to use than icing sheets.  Today I needed to use my printer and I could not get the icing sheets off the backing.  I eventually resorted to using rice paper instead as it is so easy.  It actually feels and acts like paper and then you just dampen the back of it with water and stick it to your fondant.  I do alot of my pre-printing work in microsoft publisher as I am familiar with this and can add backgrounds, move things around etc.

There are three types of paper on the market, Rice, Potato, and Sugar.

RIce and potato do not have background, they are chewier and do not taste as good as Sugar, but they are les expensive than sugar.. Sugar or Icing Sheets taste great, melt in to the cake more than rice or potato and they have a backing.  Icing Sheets can be made by different manufacturers. Each manufacture does things a bit differently. Our Icing Images Premium Icing Sheets have a clear backing and the sheet runs edge to edge giving you more icing sheet area. They feature their easy peel backing for ease and they taste great.

To answer your question regarding software. Most icing sheet companies will have some sort of free printing program available. They will do the basic editing. You can use any software when printing on 8.5x11 or 8.5x14 sheets, but when you are printing the multiple up such as 2.5" circles that are 12 up or the 1.25" circles that are 48 per sheet, you would want to use the companies software at least for printing.

I use a program that I paid for called wrapcandy. I purchased it over 10 years ago, and always get good results. I can do cake strips, to circles, any size, I can even use any of the 1000's of fonts to print anything I want. It even puts shadows around ovals and other shapes to create a dramatic antique effect on pictures.

Basically, the way it works, you open the program, determine the size you want to use, and it creats a template for you, and then prints as many as a page will fit.

ie: if I wanted to make very small cookies, say, 1-1/2" round, I would open the program, and choose my 1.5 size, and then it creats a box. I import the image, clipart, background, etc into the program and then scale it down to fit inside the square.

Then I bring up the circle to place inside, and it will steal colors off anything you import, so that your border matches whatever you are going to print.

I can then bring up and add fonts, and make them arc, wave, or a half circle, as in the pic above. Note, this is just a quick sample of what you can do. I will get 35 top my icing pages using this size. 

I LOVE this software program, and it was the best $$$ I ever spent. Helped me make lots of $$$ when I lived in Texas.

OK, I will try to explain it a little better.

I can make any size template however I want

Circles, rectangles, squares, etc.

I get my size needed, and open a clean screen to work on.

I chose to do 3 cake wraps, these are all 2.5 high x over 10" long

I then import whatever backgrounds, pictures, photos, etc. I want to use and clean it up, either by cropping, shadowing, or just sizing it to what I need.

I took three 12 x 12 digital scrapbook backgrounds and resized then cropped them to fit the area I will need.

Then I print this creation on my printer using icing paper from icingimages.

The sample below is what I just did, took me less than a minute.

I can save this for future use as a jpeg, png, etc.

Hope I explained it better.

I am assuming you want a software program to create things to print off using your edible ink printer? What kinds of things, please be a little more specific.

AHello I am new to this site, sorry to barge in on this thread but I haven't been able to work out how to start my own, and I too am enquiring about edible printing. I have bought a cannon printer but am struggling with software I used a free trial to make cupcake toppers but it took a while. I am of the generation that taught myself to use a computer, we only had two in the whole high school, and I need something that will teach me how to use it, I really struggle creating templates. I did look at the candy wrapper software, but does it explain exactly how to use it?

I use a Canon Pixma MP620.  I bought it a couple of years ago to do edible printing on chocolates. You can get edible ink from KopyKake, icingimages.com, inkedibles.com, etc.  I've used it for cake printing as well as chocolate work.  

I'm sure there are updated models now from Canon.  Look at the inks and they will tell you the models they are compatible with.

Have you tried Cake Hollywood? They have borders and stuff that you can print directly to your printer. They do cupcakes, cookies, cakes and other crazy sizes. 

iPrint is a free program that allows you to print on the precut circles from the icing sheets.  We also have iDesigns, however that is  a subscription program that allows you to choose from over 1500 different images that are licensed for edible use.  This way you don't get in trouble for printing things that you should not be legally printing.  Since it works with the icing sheets that are already cut in circles and rectangles it makes things very simple, plus it has an on line help section with beautiful pictures to make things easy!

For all of our customers we have a FREE program that was designed by Icing Images for edible printing.  If you are our customer you have complete access to it.  It is an online program.  You basically sign in, upload your pictures.  You can add text, frames and more.  If you are using the precut circles like the 1.25" circles for example, it already has the template in there for you to use.  You drag the picture over and you can print the same picture repeated on the circles or you can select different parts of the picture or select several different pictures to print on different circles.  But it is free.  Check it out at http://www.icingimages.com/iprint

Icing images your software is not free as you have to purchase a product off you to use it as I found out to my frustration today 

Yes, I know, I stated in my post that it is free for our customers.  It is designed around our icing sheets.  If you want to use another brand then you would have to use the customized feature which you do have to pay for.

Hope you don't mind me jumping in on your post. I just bought a canon pixma mg5550 and ordered the edible inks and decor paper. Please can someone tell me what setting I need to put the printer at? Also aprox how many sheets do you get out of a set of ink?

Alot depends on the brand of ink.  Our settings are on Matte paper and standard paper quality. If you are a customer of ours you can log on to our website and into your account and all the settings are in the support section.  Quantity of pages is dependent on what you are printing.  Full page full color about 40 sheets, but no one prints like that.
