Tips to avoid splotchy colored SMBC?

I always have some splotchiness with my colors when I use SMBC. I do a thorough job of mixing, so I really don't think that's the problem. The problem seems to appear once I hot-knife a cake I've pulled out of the freezer in an effort to smooth out the icing. I'm pretty sure this is attributable to the heat from the blade melting the fats. I don't own an airbrush machine (yet-it's on the wish list) so that's not a workable fix for me. Does anyone have any other suggestions for avoiding the splotchiness?

You are using oil based candy colors rather than water based gel colors right?

I have been using Wilton's gel colors. I need to pick up some oil based colors, huh?

Yep.

I have the same problem as well with SMBC that hasn't had colour added. It's just more apparent when the icing's been coloured. I thought it was the hot knife/fats issue.
