Is it a really bad thing to tell a customer you don't want to deal with that you are booked for the date they need? Not a normal practice for me, but I just did this...

If the alternative is telling someone that they are too rude to deal with, what else can you do? 

 

I think it's tactful.

I just tell them I am unavailable for that date. What i plan to do with the day remains my business.

Saying "Sorry I'm already booked" isn't a little white lie. 

 

You will FOR SURE be spending at least a few minutes that day with a nice tall drink thinking of that poor sweet dear customer on the "no cake" list...right?

Funnily enough, I am ALWAYS fully booked when someone asks for a carved car cake!
 

Inside this fat body, there's a thin woman screaming to get out...... but I can usually shut her up with chocolate!

the only potential problem can be that they may respond--well when do you have an opening

I have used the old "I am unavailable" or "I am booked for that day/weekend" for people I don't want to deal with or even just to take time off with my family.  It's not a lie at all... I have other plans than to spend my valuable time creating your cake that I don't like the design concept of anyway.  It's non of there business if I am spending my time with my family or with cake!
