That is a wonderful excuse! Isn't it funny how we all think we know it all when we are teens? I am so glad we can continue to grow and improve our minds, after our bodies are done growing ;-)

AHaha, I wanted to be a pastry chef when I was 16, I should have stuck with that instead of bouncing around all the other professions!
AThe only thing I wanted at sixteen was to date everyone in the world, and I told my mother that! Must have terrified her.
Here is my wedding cake, my husband liked my mothers' from the 60's she also had 5 tiers. I made the 6 inch in a traditional fruit cake. and the rest was Styrofoam with section of cake for cutting. we had sheet cakes. I found out after the wedding that some people didn't eat any of the other desserts because they were waiting to try the "wedding cake" I made. They had no idea that is was fake. hee hee hee

haha, I just did a wedding cake, all fake except the top 6" tier. There was a dessert buffet, so they didn't think there would be any issues with a lack of dessert.
But people just went up to the cake with their own plate and butter knife and helped themselves to the top tier, was waiting for someone to cut into styrofoam. Nobody was brave enough to start in on the other tiers though, lol.

that is too funny, don't think anyone tried that. we did have the 6 inch on our first anniversary, and it was just as I made it.

Guess not, they did want to save it for family, at least enough for 2 small pieces got rescued so the bride and groom could actually have a proper piece each at home.
That was a new one for me, I've never even heard of people helping themselves to wedding cake, especially when it obviously isn't being served.

Here is ours 2004, My sister made it for me and my oldest daughter decorated it. And it was delicious. We had the top a year later and it was just as good then as it was on our wedding day. My hubby still says that was the bet cake he has ever had. Even though I have been making cakes since for years. He liked this one better. My 22 yr old grandson is getting married in Sept and he wants one just like it.

AThank You! I iced the cakes with final coat of buttercream and decorations and then I put them in the freezer uncovered for a while so the icing could get nice and hard. After that I took them out of the freezer and wrapped them with several layers of plastic wrap, not too tight, not too loose. When it came time to unthaw the cakes, they were taken out of the freezer and the wrap was cut off immediately while the icing was still hard and they were put in the fridge in their boxes. You definitely want to take them out a few days before the event to be sure. I did use real Buttercream (no shortening), not sure how it works with other icings.
I was not planning on making my wedding cake until I thought of this! I was so pleased with the taste too, the cake was extremely moist. Weddings are stressful enough without having to mess with your cake day of. I DIY'd almost our entire wedding, a lot of work but worth it!

AI made my own wedding cake a few months ago. I am mostly happy with it, but would have loved to add more of I'd had the time. Unfortunately, I had to decorate the whole thing (or most of it) in our hotel room on our wedding day. I posted a pic in another thread last month about making your own birthday cake.

1987 We were probably one of the last couple to get sugar bells but it's what I loved most about our cake. (you can see our florist decided it was was Ok to use pink instead of peach carnations in my bouquet)
I have a question relating to the older style cakes. How does one cut a cake that is covered in RI?
AI had it on mine and I don't remember it being hard to cut, although the knife they gave us is pretty sharp! I guess there is something in it to stop it during super hard (glycerine I think).

As far as I know all the american old school cakes were covered in buttercream, maybe the english ones were not?
AEnglish wedding cakes used to always be covered in royal icing, I don't know how common it still is though.
AOur cake was covered in buttercream, icing, roses everything except the sugar bells.
Here was my August 2011 wedding cake:
It was actually my first ever tiered cake (besides my practice cake to make sure this plan would work).
It was supposed to look like this Martha Stewart Weddings cake:
but I was afraid to leave it stacked in the venue's freezer overnight, so I asked the venue coordinator if she would just set the top cake stand on top of the bottom two tiers after she wheeled it out of the fridge and placed it on the display table. Somehow we severely miscommunicated and she thought I just wanted just the cake on the top of the bottom two tiers and not the stand. I was a little upset - you only get one chance to do it how you want to, right? But I don't think anyone else even noticed. I just about had a heart attack when we went around back to cut it though - there was a full on HAND PRINT of missing buttercream from where she'd picked it up!

I am not a decorator, I just have some good cake recipes. My daughter asked me to make the cakes for her wedding (June 22) and I reluctantly said yes. I used cakecentral to answer the many questions I had to even know how to do this. So thanks to all of you that post on this forum!!
The cakes would be pretty embarrassing for a professional baker/decorator but they tasted good and the bride was happy. :) Through a series of mishaps, I was very, very late getting to the venue, the room was very dark and there were several ladies helping get the cakes on the table so the ribbons and burlap flowers could have looked better but this is how it turned out.
Carrot, red velvet, german chocolate and the bride's cake was banana.
My daughter is 29 and disabled when she found out we were getting married all she wanted to do was make our cake and she did, and I think it’s the most lovely wedding cake I’ve ever seen. <3

For not knowing what you were doing, it turned out well. A few little things here and there but I am sure your daughter loved it. My mom is a great baker but not a decorator either. I can't imagine what anything she made would have looked like. lol.
