What Should I Use To Make An Imitation Maple Syrup For Over The Top Of A Pancake Cake?

Hi everyone.
Im making a "pancake cake" in the next couple of days. Mud cake with fondant to look like a stack of pancakes. I was wondering what I should I use as the maple syrup on top? Im really stumped for ideas, and havent been able to find much info any what I could use. I would like it to look as realistic as I can, without actually using maple syrup. Any help would be great! Thank you :)
Hi! I made my pancake stack all buttercream not fondant. For the syrup you can use a corn syrup with gel color mixed in to give you the right color. I also used some caramel ice cream topping mixed in too. This is a fun cake - enjoy!
Also my pats of butter are softened Starburst candies.

I used home made piping gel as described in the link.
Here's a great tutorlal on making one. I followed the steps here and it turned out great! It's in my pictures. I didn't do the fruit in the photo though.
