Peer Review Cake Club! - Page 14

I am in the process of learning to play with buttercream  This is my second attempt at getting it smooth.  Last time I cheated and covered with lots of fondant decorations, this time I went for the more naked look.  I know the top edges are not crisp, nor the sides perfect (maybe this will come with more practice) but what I am really interested in hearing about is the flower placement.  I don't think it is quite right. What does it need?

Cazza, I can't reply on the photo but really want to help. I apologize for posting here. The top flowers are larger than the bottom. Switch them, & I think you'll like it.

It's never "just cake!"

You may get a cake for $way to little but you won't get this cake!

Thanks for the help.  I pulled the flowers off and tried putting the larger ones at the bottom and the smaller ones at the top and it didn't work at all.  I think next time I will maybe try Anna's suggestion and make a taller cake.  I know I can put the flowers in the middle but I am a bit sick of doing this and wanted to try something a bit different.  Oh well, you can learn from your mistakes.

Here we go....my husband and I started selling our cakes 4 months ago urged by our friends to advertise. We are both teachers byntrade, but like to do this together. We've been very busy and everyone seems to like them. He does the detailed fondant work and I'm the baker. I do help with cutting out basic shapes and such, but i can't take credit for the figures in any way. Here is our first detailed baby shower cake. It is not our design..copied from a picture the mom wanted.

Be kind....

I would love some feedback so here goes! I didn't get this best picture because this poor cake was almost a catastrophe! I made this for Cakes Against Cancer For Kids and I originally had the head turned facing the other way but when I went to cover with fondant the head was too heavy and started tearing the cake!! This is also why poor Bambi has no neck...I had to do some major reconstruction!! I think I hid most of the damage but there was some still...especially on the back of the head which you can't see. Ugh I was so about to swear off making cakes after this one!!

Thanks for any feedback :)

I wouldn't mind a review! I am thinking of submitting this cake for a contest - what do you think?!

I'm really far behind in critiquing cakes! My apologies icon_smile.gif. I will come back tonight and get caught up.

I don't mean to say this to be mean, however; I believe they have said in the past to NOT ask for them to "be nice." If you are wanting their proper review they are generally going to not hold back and actually critique your cake to HELP you improve! This thread is not to ooo and ahh over cakes, it's meant to be "brutally" honest and HELP us improve.  =-)

This is my first post on this thread.  I know there are several things wrong with the cake not looking clean, so no need to point all that out.  It's not that I don't want constructive criticism, but I know that would be a long list and don't want anyone taking up that much time.

I would like critique on the painted rose.  Their are so many beautifully painted cakes on this site.  I would really like to improve my painting skills.  I do like it, but it's just not right.  I like the center better than the outer petals.  Please be critical/helpful!

A few things I had on my to do list but never got around as I was pressed for time..

Cover the Cake drum

Use the Tappits instead of writing by hand on a  plaque

Use an edible ribbon

Make and use gp butterflies

Would love to improve and learn new things... TIA
