Question about scale!!

I don't know how heavy your cakes are typically. I don't weigh my finished cakes, but I do bake by weight. I recently had to replace my scale and got an OXO scale with a pull-out display (makes it easier to see the numbers when you have a large bowl on it). It only has an 11 pound limit, though, so I can't imagine that would be enough.

The higher weight limit would be a must, of course, but that pull-out display is genius! I weigh my unbaked cake layers (to make sure the batter is evenly distributed between layers before baking). When the cake is over 8", I can hardly get the thing on my scale without covering up the read-out. I'm going to see about getting one of those the next time I have to buy a scale.

Perhaps the best scale for this would be like a digital bathroom scale. Hold your cake and stand on the scale. Record weight. Weigh yourself and subtract your weight, to get the weight of the finished cake. Or if it starts at a low enough reading, just put the cake on the scale and weigh it, if it fits. A bathroom scale would be much cheaper than an industrial type kitchen scale, I think. 

The bathroom scale is a good tip. I used to do that to weigh my baby, but didn't think of it for this. The pull out scale I mentioned earlier was found at Target, but I'm sure plenty of places have it. I paid about $50 for it, which is a bit high for a 11 lb kitchen scale, but after breaking two cheaper models in the last year, I figured it would be worth it if it doesn't break.
