Duncan Hines Flavor packets for frosting....

Has anyone tried these frosting creations packets in your buttercream??? You're supposed to use them with their starter frostings...What were the results? Did it change the texture of your buttercream in a good or bad way? I am doing a strawberry flavored cake this weekekend, and bought a few of the strawberry shortcake packets, but wanted to ask opinions before i dare try it.

I actually tried one for fun yesterday. It was the vanilla cherry packet. Overall it actually tasted ok and didn't change the texture of my buttercream (homemade ) but it did change it to a light pink. I personally think you could probably get the same if not better results from extracts or emulsions, or puréed fruit. That said, I'm still curious what the bubble gum packet tastes like icon_razz.gif

Personally, I'm inclined to stick with the usual suspects myself: Vermont Grade B for maple frosting (or with ground cinnamon for maple-cinnamon), a combination of seedless strawberry jam and imitation strawberry extract for strawberry, and pure vanilla extract for vanilla.

 

And if I must do chocolate, canned chocolate frosting.

I've used them for both flavoring cake and for icing. I used the caramel mixed with a white cake mix and it tasted awesome! The icing was pretty tasty as well, but it does change the color of frosting, so it wouldn't work if you wanted white icing or a different color. I also didn't use a whole lot in my icing. If you do use it, I would just add a little at a time until you get the flavor you want.
