I'm am making a cake for a 66 year old man. I have no idea what to do with his cake. He is not into sports his only hobby is tools. I'm not very experienced with cakes I have been doing them for a year or so. I would like a beginners fondant cake that would look awesome. I'm good at sculpting figures but not at the carving yet. Thanks I appreciate all ideas. Thanks!

I've done cakes that look like a tool box with tools, tape measure, and roll of duct tape. The tape measure cake was very similar to the little tape measure next to the duct tape.  Any of those should work. This was a BIG cake--two full sheet cakes. As a point of reference, the pliers, wrench and screwdriver are life-size. The little plaque on the easel reads: "everything you see is made of edible materials, including this note". All of my gift cakes are also experimental in some way and this one definitely had some issues. I at least was able to fix the rumpled "thank you" in the picture frame before delivering. It took two men to carry it, and it had to go up a flight of stairs!

Single layer 8" cake. Screwdriver and bent nails are fondant. Tape measure is rice krispies covered in fondant.

Closeup of tape measure that goes with duct tape cake. I'm in the beginning stages of a remodel and reached for this thing at least a half-dozen times to measure something!

I really like handymama's second cake. It's a simple design with a big impact for a tool-happy man. Maybe add a few more tools - I've seen chocolate molds for hammers, screwdrivers, etc. Have fun!

I googled tool cake and there are some really cute cakes.  Many of them you should be able to do if you are good at making figures.

Here are a few simple ideas that you might put to use:

Just because you have limited information you don't especially have to use it.  You can go w/a more generic idea.  Might be better in the long run.

I have lots of other similar designs in my gallery - take a look, something might jump out to you :)

Love the wood grain effect, especially the wood plaque.

Very nice.  I'm sure he was pleased.  Love the saw blade and the saw dust detail.
