Scoop and Save is about 45 minutes away and I have to drive over a toll bridge AND they're not open on Sundays!  Michaels doesn't really carry all that much. I find myself driving across the USA border to pick up things but then that is inconvenient, too, and the Michaels there doesnt always have what I need in stock. I did, however, find a great company a couple of weeks ago www.vanillafoodcompany.ca . They are based out of Markham, ON and I found their prices to be decent. AND they only charge $7.00 flat fee for shipping to Canada. I actually needed my items quickly so I upgraded my shipping but I received my items in two days so the extra $8.00 in shipping was totally worth it.  I ordered my cupcake trays from a company in the US and have them shipped to a receiving company across the border and I drive over and pick them up.....saves me a ton of money! The plastic clamshell containers that hold 12 regular sized cupcakes costs me $2.50 locally but when I order them from the US and pick them up across the line they only end up costing me $1.00 each and that includes the cost of shipping!  That's a big savings!  I find there is not only limited supply here but the stuff you can get here is super expensive!  I've mentioned to my husband a couple of times that we should consider opening a cake supply business!  LOL!

Funny how it works, I moved from Vancouver to Lynden, and I cross the border to go back to scoop and save :)  There are zero cake decorating stores here, except Michael's, if you count that, and Langley is closer than Seattle.

I'm in Markham, Flour Confections, Icing Inspirations and L&M are my go-to supply stores. There is also Sugar Tiers in Markham that carries a lot of UK items. Sometimes if I need to have something shipped I'll check UK sites too. Quite often it's faster and shipping is less and it doesn't get held up at the border for days.

Do you have friends / family in the USA that you can trust to have product shipped to them and have them ship it to you?

I decorate for a hobby but I like having fancy tools, I find it makes my life easier.  I have a friend that lives in Boston is nice enough to be my postal mule. I refund her via PayPal and a few times a year I send her a "Canadian" care package.  Usually once a month she will open all my shipments and repackage it into a flat rate shipping box and sends it off to me.

I just browsed the website of Creative Cutters, well, they've got a nice variety of tools!  I'm positive I would be able to grab lots of stuff from them. And the retail store is in Richmond Hill, which is within driving distance for me. Thanks to jemchina!!

izzy sweet - you're so lucky! That's so cost efficient.

kaat - thank you for sharing your experience! thanks for mentioning Sugar Tiers, in addition to the others. My to-check supplier list goes on....

HalifaxMommy, yes I do know some ppl in the States. I guess I will use that for stuff that I don't need urgently. Thanks for sharing your idea!

Again, I'm so happy I started this thread and got so much help on this site from my fellow Canadian bakers!

Scrumdiddlycakes, don't you find Scoop and Save a little expensive?  I find that I can order online and pay for shipping and still get the items cheaper than Scoop and Save and I didnt have to go anywhere...lol...or take the chance of driving all the way out there only to find out the item I want isnt in stock.
