I am making a cake for my DH and i need black fondant but just realized i do not have any black dye. Does anyone know what colors to use to still get black fondant? my fondant is orignally white.
Whoa... I have no idea about other colors that would work. I would just suggest running out to Hobby Lobby (they sell Americolor gel pastes now) or even walmart sometimes has at least the Wilton ones.
I hate finding out I've run out of something the day I need it. Ugh, that sucks! Happens way too often! haha. Good luck though!

AYikes. Without gel, I'd try first adding cocoa powder to get it dark brown, then add lots of green and purple. Those seem to be the undertones of the black icing colors I've used.
I'm afraid that I am too late to help with this project, but I keep a supply of black powdered food coloring. I make my own MFF and add it with the powdered sugar. It doesn't upset the recipe balance and gives me a good reliable black.

Making black is not easy without black food coloring, but it can be done. (I'm an artist as well, so I know my paints:) First off start mixing in a good amount of dark brown into your fondant...It will remain a light brown or baby poop lol until you add some red into it..Knead well...now you should have a nice deep chocolate brown. if it's not chocolate yet, add more red. Now in fairly large, but equal amounts add in dark blue and a dark purple. The deeper you get the chocolate color, the better the black will be
Ducky 316, your advice worked GREAT!! a perfect black, like it was from a jar :) Thank you
I have some (well wrapped) black sugarpaste (fondant) in the cupboard from a previous project as I know I wouldn't be able to get a decent shade of black. (I still have a lot to learn) I have yet to attempt a project that needs a large amount. I was advised that it is very difficult to get an exact deep shade of a required colour and I still don't have a big range of colourings in my cupboard, I tend to buy a different pot of colour for every project. Well done on a successful shade.
I did find the pre-coloured black very greasy to work with.
