Whoa... I have no idea about other colors that would work. I would just suggest running out to Hobby Lobby (they sell Americolor gel pastes now) or even walmart sometimes has at least the Wilton ones.
I hate finding out I've run out of something the day I need it. Ugh, that sucks! Happens way too often! haha. Good luck though!

I'm afraid that I am too late to help with this project, but I keep a supply of black powdered food coloring. I make my own MFF and add it with the powdered sugar. It doesn't upset the recipe balance and gives me a good reliable black.

Never fear shadows. They simply mean there's a light shining somewhere nearby.

Making black is not easy without black food coloring, but it can be done. (I'm an artist as well, so I know my paints:) First off start mixing in a good amount of dark brown into your fondant...It will remain a light brown or baby poop lol until you add some red into it..Knead well...now you should have a nice deep chocolate brown. if it's not chocolate yet, add more red. Now in fairly large, but equal amounts add in dark blue and a dark purple. The deeper you get the chocolate color, the better the black will be ![]()
