i know that butter is better than margarine and that it is better to buy the best you can but should you use an unsalted butter or does it not matter when making cakes and buttercream?

I use salted - Tesco value butter (unless something else like Lurpak is on offer at 2 for £2!!)
Inside this fat body, there's a thin woman screaming to get out...... but I can usually shut her up with chocolate!

I use salted butter for cake--but I skip all the salt in the recipe, and I mix my own self rising flour without salt. I also use margarine, they have improved the manufacturing process in the last few years so that you should not be afraid to use it. Margarine is still healthier than Trex.
For buttercream, unsalted is the best. You can always add a pinch of salt, which is a lot less than the salted butter is allowed to have.
