Experienced Kitchenaid users - help with 7 qt needed!

Hi,

 

Dh bought me a 7 qt Kitchenaid stand mixer in December.  I checked the beater-to-bowl clearance and it seemed fine, however, I was whipping up egg whites the other night (that just would NOT whip up so my mixer was going for a LOOONG time) and I noticed after cleaning the bowl that I had distinct scratch marks from the whip at the bottom of the bowl (and they were not there before).  I whipped up egg whites just the other day without an issue, but my egg whites whipped up much faster so the mixer was not on as long.

 

I carefully checked the clearance again, and it does NOT touch the bottom of the bowl.  I can't figure out what's going on.  I called Kitchenaid and they told me to put a dime at the bottom of the bowl and if the mixer can move it around, it's at the right setting.  Mine doesn't even touch the dime (more room under the whip), so I'm even more perplexed as to why this happened since my beaters seem to have more than enough clearance.

 

A friend of mine suggested that perhaps I didn't click in the bowl properly for that particular batch of egg whites, hence scratching the bowl.

 

I'm at a loss and I'm a little nervous using my machine again since I don't want to make matters worse.

 

Any thoughts?

If it doesn't even touch the dime, it shouldn't have been able to scratch the bowl. You're friend may be right about clickin it in place.

That much clearance would also cause trouble getting the eggs to whip. I had to adjust mine lower specifically because I noticed egg whites were taking awful long.

One of our fellow CCers recently posted a great link to Kitchenaid self repairs on YouTube. You can probably do a search for it here on cake central as well as You Tube. One o the videos is adjusting height lower.

I'm beginning to really think that I may have not clicked the bowl in properly.  Grrr.  No fault but my own.  I think they should install a beeping system to warn newbies about the bowl not being clicked in properly - lol!  I never had to think about it with my old tilt head.

 

Are the bowl and whisk still ok to use given that they are a little scratched?  Is there a finish I should be concerned about?

 

I will ask DH to try to adjust the bowl lower and retry the dime test - I scrapped a batch of egg whites because they were taking too long to whip and the second batch was firm but not as firm as I usually like resulting in a very soft smbc that was hard to work with.

My bowl is scratched from doing the same thing as you, and I've never had a problem because of it.  I get annoyed looking at my bowl because it doesn't look "perfect" anymore, but no actual harm other than that.

I do. I haven't scratched mine but agree with Jennicake. Wash it & it will be fine. Stainless steel tables get scratched all the time.

I have had mine for years and it is scratched and works wonderfully... Don't worry about the scratch.

Nope, it's 5 or 5.5 qt. Cant remember exactly. It's the one with the really powerful motor though, fab for making fondant in there!

Make sure to lock it into place. If one side is not locked (or the back) then it will be tilted and the beaters will bump.  If the clearance is off (the beater should nudge a dime a bit, but not move it around a lot), you can adjust the height of the beater relative to the bowl.  There is a you tube about this, although the one I found  shows the tilting mixer.  For our 7 quart, lower the bowl and you will see the screw on the back column.  It is hidden when the bowl is up.  If you turn the screw clockwise it will lower the beaters, counterclockwise will raise it.  HTH

I have a KA 7qt with the same problem. I think I know why. It's hard to explain but I'll try. Underneath the mixer head is the round plate where the beaters attach. On my mixer that plate (the planetary) is sitting at a slight angle so it does not rotate parallel to the mixer head. You may have to run it to see this. I expect the effect of this is is to cause the beater to be attached at a very slight angle. My mixer makes a slight clicking sound. They sent me another mixer-- worse than the original (looked like a refurbished but was told it was new). Told me to try it for a while and see what happens. Still have the original under warranty. I looked at the ones at Williams sonoma. The price has gone way up and some of the display models have the same defect. I am not happy about this as it will wear out faster this way.
