I really need your help people...

I am making a cake for my son's 4th birthday and I am in a bit of a dilema  about how to make the wings for it. Most of you probably wont have heard of the cake I'm trying to make but you may be able to google it, it's a 'Twigs' cake from a tv show called 'Tree Fu Tom' which is on in the UK at the moment. Basically the cake needs some large wings which look like oak leaves coming out of a little 'elf's' back. The cake is going to be a 3D model of this character so the wings would be max of 20cm long by 8cm wide. I have thought about using sugarpaste/modelling paste but I'm not sure this will work as I don;t know how I would hold it up/support them. I've looked at how to make gelatin wings but these all seems to be quite small from the tutorials and pictures I have seen.

Any suggestions anyone? I really want to make them out of some edible material rather than paper or similar so it is a 'real' cake and not a cake with 'bits added'.

Any help gratefully received!!!

Thanks x

If the dowel rods in the tutorial
DeliciousDesserts posted are too thick, you could probably use a thick floral wire to support the wings as well.  You've probably already searched, but there's a cute Tree Fu Tom cake in the CC gallery: http://cakecentral.com/g/i/2851354/a/3264665/close-up-of-twigg/sort/display_order/  The wings are much smaller, so I get the logistics of making yours will be different, but you may want to reach out to that user to see if they have any suggestions.

Also this tutorial http://www.instructables.com/id/How-I-made-my-Threadcakes-Hooded-3D-cake/?ALLSTEPS includes the little feathered bird on her head.  It looks like she uses lollipop sticks and wires to support the wings.

HTH!

I recently made a dragon groom's cake and the wings were about 4"x8."  I made floral wire (a heavier gage so they are sturdy!) skeleton, and sandwiched gumpaste on either side of them using tylose glue to keep them together.  Leave wires long enough so that you can poke them way down in the body so that they don't start to sag.  I let them dry for several days, just know that whatever you lay them on to dry is the texture you are going to get and might be seen!  Hope that helps!
