I am making a cake for a customer who has basically given me free reign. It's for a birthday party, with a tool theme. Everyone is wearing flannel and bringing tools for the birthday boy (man). The only request is that the cake have some kind of flannel print somewhere, with some tools.
So this is what I have come up with- just having trouble figuring out which tier should go on top!
The bottom tier will be a 10" square- fondant covered cake, painted and decorated to look like a wood block. Will have a gumpaste saw blade "cutting" into the side of this tier. Plan to have a fondant tape measure draped around the bottom, with a sign that says "Ben's Tools".
Top tier will be 8" round- red fondant covered, with flannel print painted onto the cake. Planned to create a "pocket" on the front of the tier that is holding a screwdriver or wrench.
My questions are- what should I put on top? A "30", for his age? Or, should I put the flannel tier on the bottom, pocket and all, and the wood tier on top? Obviously the flannel would now be the 10" and the wood would now be the 8". That way, I could make the "saw" the topper??
HELP! I have compiled a few ideas in my planner, but need just a bit of final direction. I will start making the tools on Monday, as the cake is due next Saturday.
