Opening up another session of the FNCC! Everyone is welcome to join us. Just stop by, tell us how your week went, talk about whatever you have been working on or whatever has been going on at your place this week. Ask for any help you might need or try to help anyone who asks. I'll be here till 11pm PST but will check back in the morning to see who, around the world, checked in after that point!

Hope to see lots of photos tonight of everyone's work!

Hi there everyone,

Eventful week around here. I got my 2nd demo cake done:

Playful, girly, with a touch of modern! All mmf covered.

It was tons of fun making it. One of the fun things I get to do this time of year is design my demo cakes so it's being fun. This week I was very happy to get it out of the way early since this morning we had a pipe break and I had to deal with that most of the day.

Sunday is Super Bowl here in the US and we are 49'r fans in our household so it's gonna be a big day. My kitchen is filled with food for Sunday since food for the game is as important as the game itself<G>. Houseful of food and people all yelling at the tv...it will be lots and lots of fun!

Hope things are going great for all of you too!

I officially relaunched my business! I'm a freaking mess, but so excited. Everyone I know, knows about it and I'm so afraid of having to tell them that I failed, again.

I am full of self doubt and worried that my skills aren't up to snuff. I can't seem to ruffle a piece of fondant to save my life.

But I did have one order for cupcakes, and I think they were passable.

AWorking on a small 4 inch cake (it's about 6 inches tall though!), covering it with fondant in advance of painting it tomorrow. Just wanted to try out the painted cake technique I saw on Craftsy, planning to do a pea**** feather on the side of my ivory fondant.

It was also only my 3rd time covering in fondant, didn't chill my crumb coat enough unfortunately but that's how you learn isn't it!

I think the cupcakes are simply lovely. I wouldn't beat yourself up so very much. I have seen what is out there and it never shocks me that there are those who clearly don't know what they are doing and yet getting paid for it! You clearly have artistic talent. Just keep working on your craft...you can always move up and up and up. But do what you love. Any time it becomes too much of a job then it's not fun anymore.

I just got done making a groundhog day birthday cake for my cousin, and handpainting a superhero cake for a friend of mine. I was really pleased with how they turned out! I've been teaching myself all about decorated cookies lately, so it was nice to do some cakes!

Hi Everyone,

I don't post very often sometimes I just read the posts late at night. But this week I finished my daughter's personal shower cake.

This was not a hard cake nor a very large one, but everything that could have gone wrong managed to happen. I finally finished it at

nine this evening just in time for tomorrow's event. When my my head stops spinning I will take a picture and send it.

Happy baking,

Wildrose6633

Wildrose, sounds like a nightmare day. Thankfully I've only had those rarely but they are the days when I wonder if I'm in the right profession. Fortunately the next cake usually goes very very well and reaffirms my passion again. Sure sucks on the bad days tho! Hopefully it all turned out well in the end.

Hi all,

It's been a while since I have posted. I usually read the posts if I am up though. I am finishing up for the night. I have Monster High Cupcakes and Cake along with a Toopy and Binoo cake, and a Jake and the Neverland Pirates cake. I just finished the toppers for the cakes and cupcakes now to let them dry for a night. Finished earlier than expected so I might get to sleep in!

My daughters birthday is on Sunday so I am going to "Paint" that tomorrow. She is having a paint party birthday, so I am going to make a splatter cake! The top and bottom tier splatter and I think I will leave the middle tier just white with a bright pink peony or some sort of flower.. Not sure yet, I made a few different kinds just not sure which will look best. I bought tri fold cardboard in hopes that I can save the splatter mess on my kitchen walls!!

Hi, I know I'm a bit late, but I spent last night (I'm in Scotland) finishing off this cake for a friend's birthday party.  It's myfirst attempt at the ruffles but I like the effect.  I've learnt so much from lurking here!

A simple ombre effect with frills and flowers.

Grace...I think you can post anything in this chat group that you want...we do have a moderator tho' who can let us know for sure. I've only posted other baked goods or dessert items here other than cakes.

Brettley, the splatter cake sounds like fun. I've made "paint" before but just "dripped" the frosting down the sides. Splattering sound like fun! Gotta ask...who the heck are Toopy and Binoo?

They are kids characters. I had NO idea who they were until about 3 months ago. Apparently they are all the craze with kids now. Sometimes I feel like I should just start watching kids shows so I don't sound like a complete fool when someone asks for something completely foreign to me! Thank goodness for google I guess.

In regards to the paint, i am prepping my "splatter area" as we speak. At least it will all wipe off, which is more than i can say for real paint.

I usually know who they are because I have grandkids now who watch the little kids cartoons and an 11 year old who watches the preteen and teen cartoons. But, even after looking it up thru google, I still don't know these two<G>. And, no, you are not the only one who feels out of touch! LOL!

Kiki, that's beautiful! And don't feel badly about your photography skills. I worked as a photographer for 20 years and learning food photography is hard! I'm still learning! LOL!

Lizzie! It's just perfect! I love the ruffles too! I'm dying to try this look..just haven't figured out how to change it a bit and make it "mine" yet. Be honest, is it hard to do?

AIts so hard, my tiny house doesn't have many great spots to get natural light! I wish I could have done a better job on my fondant, and I should have used a finer brush. But I'm pretty happy with it as a first attempt!

Cat, thanks so much!

Once I worked out in my head how much of each shade I needed, it was easy.  One little trick I realised was to leave the ruffled strips to dry for just a minute or two before sticking them to the cake so that they don't flop about so much, but obviously while they're still flexible enough to curve.

"I'm dying to try this look..just haven't figured out how to change it a bit and make it "mine" yet."

That's the trouble with all these fads for cakes - they look fun to do but it is hard not to have them all look so samey.  I just decided that I wanted to try it, and my friends don't spend all their time checking out cake designs like me, so it'll be new to them!

Hope you have fun with your version :-)

Thanx for the tips...I'm going to do this on a Demo Cake so if I have a hard time it won't matter. Get the technique down before trying it for a client<G>. I'll share it when I do. Won't be till March tho..I have client cakes till then.
