I would like to make a few Dr. Suess books out of cake. I am thinking that the cover would be made out of fondant, but how do you make it so the edges and the corners that hang a little over the cake don't droop? Also, would royal icing be the way to go for the cover designs? TIA

If you have the time, I highly recommend getting the "Book Smarts" DVD from SugarEd Productions:
http://www.sugaredproductions.com/product/Book-Smarts-DVD/
It describes how to make the covers hang over (like you were asking) along with other great techniques.

I just finished my first book cake yesterday.. I made the cover and side binder in one piece. Then I shaped it over some cardstock paper folded like I wanted the cover to be. I decorated the fondant and then left it to dry hanging off of some stacked books overnight. Got up the next morning and just placed it on the cake! The ends were firm enough not to droop and I didn't use any tylose. You can look at it in my photos. It was actually one of the easier cakes I've made!
