How to make a tree cake

Hi everyone,
I've got a question and I need your help.

 

My grandparents have their 60 wedding anniversary in few weeks and I will create a family tree cake.
I found one on flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/theuncommoncakery/6033850578/) and I really love it. Would be great if I could make it, too.
The problem is, I've got no idea how to manage that the tree trunk will hold the crown.
Have you got any ideas? The crown will made of cake, covered with fondant.

LOL... I would use a cake plate. Cover the base of the plate with the brown fondant and hide the plate under the cake (I have some really small cake plates. 

 

Or... create your own "cake plate" with a pvc "trunk", mounted to a base and attached to a "plate" to still cake on.

use two plates and one tube

 

scroll down to see the acrylic tubes

 

you can use a bigger plate on the bottom for nice secure stability

you're welcome!

 

y'know just 'cover' the top cake plate with leaves that hang down or something

 

you can have the cake kinda poof out on the sides a bit to get that look you want in the picture

 

i've used that set up for many sculptures

 

i gotta whonking chalice in my photos somewhere made that way--at least two feet tall
