AHi all! I'm fairly new to the cake decorating business. My sister referred a co-worker to me and she requested a topsy turvy cake--for 300 people. I gave her my prices(before she told me the amount of people) I usually charge $3.50 for fondant but since she wanted a topsy turvy cake I quoted her $4.00/serving. My question is do you think this is too much to chage? She hasn't gotten back with me, probably because she's shopping around. Also I live in Northern Virginia about 40 mins from D.C. and I'm a from scratch baker.

Thanks in advance!

you are in the dc area wondering if $4 a serving is overboard for a sculpted cake

doing fondant cakes for $3.50 in/near the dc market

maybe she hasn't gotten back to you because your pricing reflects on your fairly new to the business status

not saying you are not capable -- i don't know--but even just doing searches on here

and reading what you can find about tts and pricing and sculptures

no, jlgreen, $4 is not close to too much

AThank you for replying. I didn't think it was. My sister sent me a text telling me that the woman doesn't want to pay $1200 for the cake. She wants a cheaper price lol. I'm going to stand behind my price and not budge.

ok don't budge but if she takes you up on it you will run screaming by the time you are done

how close to Little Washington VA are you??

some of that area is pretty remote but i mean you got fine dining in the woods over there--the cheapest night in the inn was over $600--the chef's menu was a fortune for like four courses or something delicious and scandalously minute

you can do better than $3.50 for fondant even if you're out in the woods

If she doesn't want to spend $1200 for cake she shouldn't order a topsy turvy for 300 people.

She is definitely shopping around and she going to come running back  to you when she discovers what a deal you are giving her.  DO NOT back down on your price, no matter what she tells you or sob story she gives you

Thanks! I always feel bad about the prices until I actually make the cake and realize how much work I put into it.
