Cake board opinion

Hello ccers

I'm just starting out in cake decorating. Made a few cakes for the fam. And I've noticed that cake boards are so expensive. 4 boards for 3-4 dollars. Seriously? A dollar a board? I digress. I've been going to the dollar tree and buying those foam-based project boards and can make about 4-5 depending on the size pan. Pretty cool! And they're pretty sturdy too. All the cakes in my pics have used these boards. Need a cake drum? Double or triple up the boards and I wrap them all in foil. Has anyone else done this before? Just trying to help out some people. I'm just trying to be frugal. I think they're amazing to get 4 boards for 25 cents.

Happy baking icon_smile.gif

Yes, a ton of us do that, but good one on you for figuring it out for yourself icon_smile.gif I don't think they're very sanitary, so I cover mine in waxed paper if they are directly under a cake. Also, the boards are much less expensive if you buy them from a cake store, rather than a hobby store. I think the 8" were about .25¢ each the last time I bought them from the cake shop, but I get mine wholesale now, (I have a business) so, I think they are about $12-$15 for a hundred icon_wink.gif I regularly use them for flipping my cakes, or to dry gumpast or fondant and just toss them in the recycling.

I would rather make 1 cake for $150, than 3 for $50 each.

The person who works for nothing will always have plenty to do!

My sarcasm is good-humored. People generally really like me, in person ;-)

Yeah, i cover all of the boards in foil or wax paper. Wow! I never even thought of wholesale. My mom has a wholesale license for her business. Maybe I can ask her for a little birthday present. icon_wink.gif thanks for your input

You guys are lucky! In Australia, I just looked at some of mine (they write the prices on the back) and I paid $4.50 for a 6 inch square board and $6.50 for a 11 inch round.

I have some boards made out of craftwood that hubby cut 20 years ago.  I just keep recovering them.  Being reasonably thick they have not warped when I have washed the old glue off.

I use foamcore boards as well.

I find the ones from the dollar stores to be "odd" and somewhat flimsy compared to the ones I get from Michael's or Joann.  I prefer the heavier paper coating on those. When on sale, the price is very comparable.

I don't cover the boards with anything because I don't want foil/paper/saran to come up when the cake is cut.  I melt edible soy wax in the microwave and wipe on a thin coat after having sanitized the board with vanilla extract or grain alcohol.
