my mother in law designs websites and did my website for me. she's pretty controlling sometimes and asked me the basics of what I wanted, I gave her a list and some drawings of what I wanted it to look like. Now that I look at it, it seems like it might be confusing for people to understand, especially the menu and pricing section. I had the worst time trying to even price my cakes and I feel like they might be too complicated now. can I get an outsiders view on my web page and maybe some suggestions? it would be very much appreciated---- http://flourchildscakes.com

I think this is a difficult situation for you as it's your MIL who has designed this website and oh boy- I wouldn't even want to begin to deal with this sort of issue.

So, the gallery of photos is not clear at all nor does it make your cakes (which are nice) look good. I would go for another type of gallery display and more clear photos..no fading border or whatever little gifs  around them.

The color, layout of the website look dated...that's only my opinion. Also the pricing page, some of the white squares/cubes are not lined up. Also, it doesn't say where you're located only the area code of your number.  And lastly, the wording..like on the 'design'/pricing page, it's all jumbled together- it should be spaced out nicer, using paragraphs and just visually easy to read.

I do think you have a very pretty name!!  I don't think I would use your MIL though to make a website...it'll do until you can maybe get someone else to do it for you..but then you may offend you MIL.

The pricing page has to be separated from the forms page.

wow thank you, you're right though I don't want to offend her, but Im not too fond of the pink and brown, or the logo she decided to do. i agree with you on all that you said, it's hard for me to see that because I've looked at the page a million times so it almost makes sense to me, but I want everything to be clean and understandable. thank you again

The paragraph on your home page has several spelling errors, and the flow is a little off.  I switched it up a little bit for you:

Flour Child's Cakes - let us make your dream cake!
Maybe you are thinking of a towering tiered cake covered in white fondant and realistic edible sugar flowers ... or maybe you are looking for sheet cake in your favourite team's colours -- no matter what you are envisioning, we can make it in cake!  Birthday parties, graduations, weddings, anniversaries, or even "just because"!  Flour Child's Cakes is a custom cake shop located in xxxxx.  We bake everything from scratch, just for you!  Contact us today for a quote.

I agree with the others that the look is dated and the pictures in the gallery are too small.

Have you had a look at the templates on wix.com?  They are free and super easy to customize.

Hi there flour child ... It's so hard when you get a family member/friend to do something for you...I understand your misgivings even before checking out your website :-/

Since I've had a look, I concur with the above. People go to cake websites to see cakes. You need more photos, bigger photos, and better-lit photos. Your seem a bit fuzzy and dark. Plus I'd lose the floral border on the photos.

There are quite a few spelling errors on home and contact pages. Line up the boxes on the contact form, separate your cake/frosting lists.

How much work have you done in coming up with your prices? Is this low/high for your area? You don't want to appear to be underpricing, but if its too high, you will put people off right away. Some people do not put prices on a website. Just a range. Eg Buttercream cakes from $3.00 per party serving. Fondant cakes from $4.50 per dessert serving etc etc.

I'm looking at it on an iPad and it does look a bit squished all together in the middle. Lots of dead space around the edges.

Life's too short to make cake pops.

I agree with other comments so far. I also want to add that the border she used around your cake pictures is extremely busy and takes away the focus from your cake pictures. It almost seems to shrink the cake pictures. I also notice this little typo in the "Menu and Pricing" paragraph: "the cake your looking for". I think she meant to type "you're" instead. I hope this helps icon_smile.gif.

I love this! I will definitely tweak it a little, I pointed out the spelling mistakes to her, I feel bad trying to explain to her what I really want. but this helps, thank you

I've also let her know about how I feel towards the small pictures all in one spot. they're all in one little spot at the beginning of the page and there's a ton of space at the bottom. unfortunately I don't know what is and isn't possible i creating a website, so it leaves me limited to what I want and my opinion in the layout. thank you all for the comments and some I already felt we're right and others I hadn't notcied

Congratulations on reaching the point where you need a website!  You are fortunate to have someone who can help you make your website a reality.

You said that you provided your MIL with "a list and some drawings" in order to get the "look" you wanted.  How much of the current website matches your original list and drawings?  What parts do NOT match your original list and drawings?    Did you want the scrolls and peach/brown color scheme?  Did you want 4 different fonts in your web address url?

Personally, I prefer a website to be light and bright with few distractions.  The wix.com site mentioned by Erin2345 has a nice model, and it is even in the peach/brown color combination:

bonneau haute designs:  http://racheltabonneau.wix.com/daveigh-productions#!contact_us/c1z0x

I agree totally with Baking Irene.  The pricing page needs to be completely separate from the order form.  It needs to have a separate "tab".

Proper punctuation, grammar and spelling are CRITICAL for any business website.  Proofread 10 times and have friends/family proofread 10 times before finalizing the design.  There are spelling errors throughout the site that need to be corrected.

Good luck!

I would contact another web developer and see what they can come up with. There is lots of room for improvement here.

Get a website from BluDomain and do everything yourself. Just about all of it is pretty easy, and what's not can be learned quickly.
