Need help making a big tea cup

This coming Saturday I'm making a tea cup with Hello Kitty's head popping out. I have looked all over for tutorials or ideas on how or what to form this cake out of. Can some one help? I had one idea of doing a 6 inch and 2-8 inch cakes and just carving it to form it but I don't do much carving. icon_smile.gif

then for the handle--make the tea cup handle with 'handles' on it

 

don't make a handle then figure out how to attach it

 

worry about it falling off

 

make a handle with additional extra long arms already built in onto it

 

all in one piece

 

maybe even reinforced with dry spaghetti noodles or skewers

 

so that when it's implanted into the side of the tea cup it is already perfectly secure

Thank you. This helps me a lot. icon_smile.gif I was thinking of making the handle out of fondant and putting tylos in it to make it strong enough to hold onto the skewers.

I made a giant coffee cup for my dad a couple of Father's Days ago. (It says Hey Hey because that's how my dad used to greet everyone!)

 

I started with the bottom of the giant cupcake pan.  For height you can add a small round layer on the bottom. I made the edge of the cup with RKT (hence the very wobbly look!!) and the handle is RKT too.  I used the pudding from a pudding cup that was a good coffee color for the coffee.  

 

i wanted to just post the link but I couldn't figure out where it was in the new format!!

"Hey Hey, who want's coffee! " as my dad would say. But this coffee is yellow cake with an espresso-vanilla filling and a chocolate caramel pudding on top. Not my smoothest fondant work, especially over the RKT cup lip but that didn't stop everyone from eating it!

Thanks, K8Memphis.  My Dad DID love it!  And he loved the giant pancake-stack cake I made for him this year too.  But v sadly he passed away suddenly this summer.  I'm glad others can enjoy seeing the foods he loved eating!

Thersaf, that's a good idea with the giant cupcake pan. I hadn't thought of that.
I sorry about your dad. I lost mine suddenly 3 years ago and it one of the hardest thing I've ever been through.
When I finish this cake I'll post it.

here is my final product. I had a hard time with supporting the head. I thought I had it supported enough but it pulled on the cake. Hoping that it's supported enough now and I dont wake up to a mess. Thank you guys for the help.

it's tremendously awesome all by itself

 

then it is the clever little paws that totally take it over the top
