Always Have Problems Covering The Sides Of Cakes!
Decorating By missconfectionality Updated 14 Jan 2013 , 11:14am by kazita
Hi Everyone!
I recently started using fondant on my cakes and I ALWAYS seem to have problems with covering the sides of cakes, especially the last few inches/centimeters I have left to adhere to the cake. :( Of course, I make the neater side the front of the cake, but the back side looks rather messy, and I really want to fix that. Any tips? I hope this all makes sense TIA!!!
Practise by covering a cake tin. You can re-roll and re-use that fondant for practise.
Some books show you very clearly, that you have to roll a larger piece of fondant than you think, to get it all the way down the side.
You should watch youtube videos, they are very helpful. There are a lot of them--use google to find them.
Satin Ice has a nice range of tutorials and several deal with covering a cake--round & square.

AThis utube video is to help with using the tool called "the mat" im not telling you to buy the mat, even though after watching this video I do want to buy it lol. Anyways at the end of the viedo she talks about how to smooth the fondant onto your cake just a few inches at a time all around the cake rather than smoothing the cake all at once....I found the video very informative.
