Piping with Luster Dust/Powder

idea to keep the tip of the piping bag flowing is to use parchment paper

coronets or coronettas they are sometimes called

i just call them little piping bags

how i avoid clumps and how i fix clumps

just make small parchment paper cones

fill & cut off the tip, pipe

when it clumps you can use your finger to smash the tip 

and hopefully dislodge the clump

you can also cut the tip a bit bigger to dislodge

otherwise just make a new bag

the piping gel thing is beautiful

i'd fry in the very hot place if i had to use a metal tip for that

oh so now i read more carefullly and you meant the painting clumps

oh

just keep your paint refreshed all the time with vodka

i fit gets too loose add more dust or wait a few for some vodka to evaporate

if it gets too thick add vodka to thin it out

both of these are great ways to do it

and i've given you the tips above to keep it from clumping

for the scrolls i'd pipe them on in royal icing, let it dry and paint them with vodka and luster dust

for the diamonds i'd cut them out of fondant and i'd also paint them w/v&ld

the mask and pearls i'd paint w/v&ld

fondant ribbon borders i'd paint

if you use the piping gel idea --it will be very metallic and very beautiful--i just use that for random trim

i don't see any opportunity to use the piping gel method for this cake unless you did some of the dots

but you could just paint the dots as well with the vodka & luster dust like everything else

so all that blather (of mine)  to say--i recommend using the vodka & luster dust to paint the whole thing

If it was me, I would pipe a grey royal icing pattern, and use grey fondant to make the diamond shapes etc. After everything has dried and set, paint over the RI and fondant bits you want silver using either luster dust + clear alcohol, OR use premade (non-water-soluble) silver edible paint, or use airbrush colours (painted on with a paintbrush).

I believe that is how the gold parts were done on the cake photo shown. Except the masks may have been airbrushed with the gold.
