Finding Marzipan

Thread Starter

I have a customer that wants the wedding cake to be covered in marzipan.  I did a wedding cake probably over 15 years ago with marzipan.  The brides mother picked up the marzipan for me at a German bakery in Salt Lake City, Utah.  Does anyone know where this might be or where I can get a large supply of it.

I don't necessarily want to make it myself because of time.  And if I recall, you would use it just like fondant to cover the cake.

Thanks,

Barbara

you could order it through your grocery store if nothing else

odense is the brand name often available to grocery stores around here

it's seasonal though but maybe they can get it for you?

American Almond makes 7 lb cans of marzipan and almond paste (if you did want to make marzipan, you could make it from the almond paste, it would be really easy making it from the paste (as opposed to truly making it from scratch) and it's cheaper than buying and shipping marzipan). You can buy it on amazon and many other places online, so shop around. I have never purchased it online It is available to me from a local distributor on a cash and carry basis. So i have no online source to recommend.

I do recommend American Almond, though. It's a really good brand.

Use Odense brand. If you want a homemade from nuts recipe, send me a message.

Does Odense come in large sizes? I like it and buy it when I need smaller amounts. I have never seen it in larger sizes. Would love to know your source.

I was responding to the last post, but there is no reason the question could not be asked of you too. The OP was looking for marzipan in larger sizes and I've never seen Odense in a large size.

To my knowledge, Odense only comes in 7 oz packages.  Check Amazon.  They have a ton of marzipan products.  Niederegger is the best and I think I have seen it on Amazon.  Anything from Lubeck is going to be awesome.  Make sure you are charging enough.  I absolutely love the taste of marzipan and I love working with it.  But it's definitely pricey.

I buy Odense at the grocery year round, and it does only come in the 7oz size.  If it's your preferred brand, you can order it online through Andre Prost Inc.  http://www.andreprost.com/store/odense.html   They appear to be charging $6.02/7oz pkg.

If you don't mind ordering from Canada, Flour confections now carries marzipan.  They have a 2.5lb container for $20.   http://www.flourconfections.com/marzipan-lbs-p-4076.html  The blurb for the product says it's American Almond.  I've never used this one.

Thank you everyone for your replies.  I will check on Amazon or maybe make a batch.  The wedding isn't until November and of course its for a good friend's daughter so in my heart I cant charge her too much.  Probably the price of the marzipan.

Am I lazy or what?  Did I really need to send three different replies?  OMG! to myself.   icon_eek.gif
