Cake Jewelry - Same As Craft Jewelry?

I'm interested in making a jewelry cake but I'm not quite sure where to start. Can I just buy the jewelry from my local craft store (AC Moore, Hobby Lobby or Michaels) and attach to the cake. It won't go directly on the cake since there will be fondant circles holding the jewelry and the circles would be taken off before cut (so it never actually touches the cake).
I don't think the cake jewelry is edible so is it OK to just buy the regular stuff from the craft store and use my 40% coupon in the process (LOL...save a few $$).
Please let me know. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated!
Thanks!
Carmen

under the heading of 'any advice being appreciated' i would kindly say it's not the best idea to use on a cake
but at least taking that extra care like you said to remove it is the best way to do that
perhaps an idea for this cake or another cake might be make & use pearl strands out of fondant and you can get cameo molds--for pouring chocolate into for just a couple bucks and you could use fondant or chocolate in there to make jewelry
you can make chains out of fondant by rolling a skinny snake, cutting the pieces off and putting it together like a paper chain & coloring it
rings would be pretty easy to make--same method
just some jewelry thought for you
There was a lady (in my town)many years ago who made fondant covered cakes and the *only* decorations on them were 'real' jewelery!. She had a rather brisk business for a short time. Don't know what happened to her.
