Okay, another pricing question......

I've had a bride send me this picture and was wondering if $500 is considered too much.  The price is to include the delivery (40 min away).  The cake looks to be a 6, 8 double barrel, 10 and 12.with the giant cascading white rose/fantasy flower flowing down the front. That is 136 slices,  ooo actually it is more because of the double barrel.  I would really appreciate some insight into this.  Thanks all!

I would charge at least $4 per serving for that cake.  My price would include the flower but NOT delivery.  I charge $1.50 per mile for delivery so that would be an additional charge. 

So no, $500 is not too much.  It's not enough IMO

Thanks cakesbycathy, I appreciate the reply.  I told her that the only way to lower the cost would be to make a couple of the tiers be dummy tiers and the rest cake and she's not sure she wants that so she thinks she will still shop around.  I priced it out at $500 divided by the number of servings (164) it would only be $3.05 per slice.  She asked if I do it in buttercream if it would be cheaper...

What would your cost be for this cake, including ingredients, labor, and overhead?

You may want to consider making a once in a life time investment with buying the Cake Boss software. It will help you out to cost your creations.

By the way, I think it is a little underpriced. Just my insight. I would have charged around $750.00-$850.00

Charge 80% cost of real cake for the dummy tier, on average.

My price for the cake would be approx $1000, plus delivery of $2 per km, but it's almost impossible to compare with others as we all have different business costs, and pay ourselves different wages!

I charge the same for a dummy tier as I do for the real thing.  My costs are almost the same as far as purchasing the styrofoam vs real ingredients.  It takes the same amount of time to decorate a dummy tier as it is to do the real thing.  Same cost to deliver.

How are prices from Ohio and Australia relevant to you in Ontario?  You all have different skill levels and different overhead costs.  OP if you don't know your costs, how should we?  It's not a difficult design requiring special work, just charge your normal price for a fondant cake per slice and your normal delivery fee. 

I homeschool because I've seen the village and I don't want it raising my children.
