Help with a Plane Cake

I know it's made with fondant, but not sure about how to do the wings or props. I'm thinking of making the cake from rice krispy treats.

 

Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Rice Krispie Treats is always a great idea for a sculpture because you have so much more time--they are very forgiving. I would use foam for the wings and for the props I'd use a daisy cutter, 'he loves me he loves me not' and pull out a few petals for that propeller effect.

That's a good idea (daisy cutter)....What would I use to paint on the fondant? I'm planning on using marshmallow fondant.

What would you make the props from? RCT as well?

I made one several months ago and took pictures of the process and posted them on my facebook page. . .here's the link:

My hubby built me the wooden base after I sketched out the size that I needed.  I cut the wings out of foamcore and place those on the base, then set my cake on top of that and the whole thing was covered with fondant and decorated.  Let me know if you have any other questions!

I would use regular fondant that had a cornstarch kneaded into it to make the props. I haven't done a lot of sculpting with marshmallow fondant. No reason why it wouldn't work though. But I think regular fondant is more reliable/consistent. My marshmallow fondant needed a lot more drying time but it did dry.

 

You could paint with any type coloring mixed with lemon extract or everclear but your props could be one color too.

I just saw your pictures, the plane looks amazing!!!  If you don't mind me asking, how much did you charge for it and how many people did it feed.  I was asked to make a similar cake and have no clue what to charge.  Please help :)

Thank you so much!  I made the cake for a family member, so I didn't charge for it.  But if I had made it to sell, I would have charged AT LEAST $150 for it.  It fed about 25 people - but we cut pretty large pieces.
