This cracks me up!
The ad says they need someone that knows what they're doing... I'm going to guess that they ordered from the cheapest person they could find and was surprised to receive a disappointing cake.
I have been reading this thread over the last two days, and boy have a laughed a lot!!
I work full time and do cakes on the side, one of my managers has bought a few cakes off me for her daughters birthdays. A few weeks ago she had asked me to do some cupcakes, and do two different flavours, which isn't a big deal. She wanted 20 cupcakes all up, so I planned to do 12 of each flavour then I would have some extras to take to my family lunch. She said that her sister would pick them up on Saturday at 1:30. On Thursday I got a panicked email from her saying shes just realised how much she is spending on this birthday and could she just get mini cupcakes and all the one flavour to bring the price down. I felt like saying I'm not a supermarket, the same effort is in there where they are big or small or whether I do both flavours.. mind you at this point I had already made two flavours of buttercream.
I ended up saying I would do the little ones and the two flavours for a bit cheaper.
Then it comes to Saturday, my partner and I went out in the morning and I made sure we were home by 1 so if she came early I was home. Then 1:30 came around.... then 2... then 2:30. I sent her a message to ask when her sister was picking up the cupcakes, she said "Oh she must've forgotten, I will try get hold of her" another half hour passes... I get a message saying "oh she thought it was tomorrow, can she come around and get them tomorrow at 12:30, or if you really need I can come and get them" I had to go into work on Sunday and was a bit pissed that she didn't remember that I was the one going in on my Sunday. So I told her that I was busy and could she come by now. Then when she came to the door she handed me $40 (I had said I would do the mini cupcakes for $30) and says "Oh I didn't have anything less, just give me the $10 later"
I really thought she was going to say sorry for messing you around, changing the order, then making you wait around for 3 hours when you had plans for the afternoon, dont worry about the change" But no...
Another time I had a bride say "oh how much do you charge for wedding cakes? I think I will make my own as it can't be that hard, but I want a back up if I get too stressed near my big day. Oh and can I just buy those edible flower rose things that you made for that other cake you did, coz I would like some of those on my cake, can I just buy them to slap on my cake?"
I almost fell of my chair!
Oh and my cupcakes were MOIST!! haha
I kinda feel dirty when I say that word! I know a few people who cringe whenever they hear it and refuse to say it like its a swear word!

i have to say that I've been making good money selling flowers to people who want to make their own cakes, whether for birthdays or weddings I don't know or care. But to have someone say they want a backup in case they screw the cake up shows that they're not planning very well.
Owatto, why would you agree to her request to dropping the price with a switch to minis and one flavor since the effort was the same and you already had two flavors of buttercream? Just say no and that the effort was the same and you already had two flavors of buttercream. It is the truth and a simple explanation. Just because they ask doesn't mean you have to fold and agree. Next time she and anyone she has talked to about it will ask for a price break again and again since it worked this time. And why should she apologize for the change since you had agreed to it. Since you didn't explain how would she know it was a burden to drop the price?
Why? When I have edible images made, I usually lay everything out so that I have two of everything, in case I screw something up.
Because if you're trying to save money by making your own cake, then you pay money to have a cake reserved for you in case you need it, you are not planning very well. This is assuming that the baker is smart enough to require payment in advance, which would negate any savings that the bride could expect to have by making her own cake.
Well, yes, I suppose having a whole back-up CAKE on stand-by would be a bit excessive; if I were to screw up THAT badly, I'd probably fall back on an off-the-shelf cake from (cue "hearbreak of psoriasis" music from the old Tegrin ad) the grocer.

So, you set up a tasting with a baker that you didn't expect good tasting cupcakes from, then you tell her that you are a competitor and you want to use her recipe... doh.

My daughters coworker sent me a text and asked if I was available to make a cake for her daughters 2nd birthday. I responded back and told her I did have availability that weekend and to call me to work out the details. She emailed me a picture of the cake she wanted and what flavor. She never asked me what I would charge for the cake. The following week, my daughter brought me a "very generous" check and said her coworker said to go ahead with the cake and that she would need it delivered. There was more than enough money to cover the delivery.
I made the cake and delivered it Saturday. I was expecting to finally meet her, instead I was greeted by her 2 and 9 year old daughters at the door and told to put the cake on the dining table. I pretended to touch up the cake for about 10 minutes and no adult appeared, so I said, could you please tell your mother that I am here. The older girl said, she knows you are here but she is busy. I finally said, "Happy Birthday" to the little girl and left.
Today she emails me, says "Sorry I missed you, the cake was beautiful and tasted great. My nine year old is an aspiring baker and would you let her come help you sometime?" What the heck? You've never laid eyes on me, but you want to bring your kid over "to help" me????
because a 9 year old is really so helpful in the kitchen...

Wow. I've had several people tell me they want to open a bakery and ask me to teach them (for free of course) how to make cakes, but that's a whole new level of No.

I had a customer who orderd a cake for this Saturday...she contacted me yesterday to ask if she could pick it up today (wednesday).....euh, your cake is not done...4 days in advance is way to much...did she think i would start her cake a week before the actual day she needs it? sorry i make my cakes fresh :)

First of all, i schedule a pick up time because i have other things going on, and second i always do finishing details the day of, so no, you cannot pick up your cake three hours early, while i'm still in my bathrobe.

An hour later I get a call from the girl asking don't I take EBT cards? And said sorry, I can't, I'm not qualified to take them since the government has qualifications to accept them that I don't meet.
So she asks me if she can give me her EBT card to go buy the supplies and get some extra groceries for myself, I can get twice the cost of the cake? o.0 uh, no! I was trying to be nice, so I told her that for serving count, the most basic cake would $300, and I don't have anywhere to store $600 worth of groceries, and isn't that illegal? Besides, I would want her kids to go hungry, if i took all her food stamps. She said don't worry about her, haha, she gets enough. So then I had to tell I I just couldn't do it.
Good to know our tax dollars are benefiting someone...

No matter what system is in place, someone will find a way to work it. A certain relative of mine is currently on unemployment because she quit her job, then decided that she hadn't actually quit and was fired, so she claimed a hostile work environment to get benefits. She doesn't need unemployment, her husband has a very nice salary at his job, and my husband and I are both pretty disgusted about it. But she's always right, so God forbid you should say anything.

I do remember one customer asking if she could pay with food stamps, I didn't think it was that unusual since in many states you can buy cakes at grocery stores with them. Of course trying to sell your food stamps is a completely different story.
Got a reply back today to a follow up email I sent to a bride. We emailed back and forth at least a dozen times figuring out designs and such (she's out of town, so no tasting/consultation), and I had worked up two different designs for her (no sketches of course, I just described the design and gave her the quotes).
She said everything sounded good, so I sent the contract for her to look over and sign. I hadn't heard from her and it's been a while, so I sent her the follow up email and she tells me that she's really sorry, but someone quoted her a much lower price that she couldn't say no to, so she's going with them. But she says she appreciates me working so hard on her designs and will of course recommend us to her other bride friends (you've never even tasted our cake??)
And I'm just thinking I wasted all this time on you for zip. And really wondering who is giving her this steal of a deal (we are by far NOT the most expensive in our area), although of course I won't ask.
